I was on an extended cross country and had a problem with high CHT.
During a climb to 8,500' (from 2,000 AGL) I noted the oil temp
climbing--got to 127C. Normally it doesn't get that high. I dropped
the nose for better cooling and reduced power a little and it began to
recede. Just before leveling off at 8,500 I noticed the CHT was near
limit--130C (preoccupied with oil temp). I further reduced power and
increased airspeed. CHT began to recede. After leveling off & bringing
power back the CHT went to limit. I chased the CHT with reduced power
settings & increased airspeed. Sufficient power reduction to sustain
level flight was not possible and I ultimately had to make a
precautionary landing.

Any ideas about what might have caused the high CHT?

Did you do regular levelling offs during your climb to let your engine get a
bit of cool air and a rest from the strain of climbing? While climbing
there is not as much air entering the cowl and what does get in is slightly
deflected wh9ich can cause a bit of overheating.
