This is a long article, but it is worth reading.

I'm more than happy with William's commentary on the 601XL. Granted, I generally work on my plane in the winter when I have more downtime, and this past winter I still got a lot done on it, but that nagging doubt about the design was in the back of my mind while working on other parts instead of the wings themselves while waiting for some sort of answer as to if there is or isn't an issue with the design. Makes me feel a lot better about closing up the right wing now and moving on to the left wing.
His explanation of rule of thumb on stall speed vs. manuevering speed was good. You figure this thing can easily go 50% beyond a manuvering speed of 105 mph, in level flight no less. The manuevering speed in this plane is roughly the same as a Cessna 152, yet cruise speed in the 152 is about 110mph (95kts), yet the 152 couldn't very easily be pushed much beyond that anyway without doing something that would seem outright extreme, like going into a dive. The XL, all you have to do is go from 65% power to 80% power and you're well over manuevering speed.
The XL is basically a flying sports car. A 152 is a Chrysler K-car by comparison.

I sought out WW and had a one-on-one, face-to-face conversation with him at Brodhead last year to talk about this very issue. What he said to me then is basically the same as what he said here.
I trust him and his methodology.
As a First Time Builder, what really scared the bejeebers out of me was that I heard that he'd sold his XL, and I was wondering "does he know something that I don't?". That's why I talked to him. It sounds like some other builders talked to him at SnF this year about the same thing.
Glad he did this. For every builder out there who is speaking up and asking questions, there's probably another hundred who are just watching and listening.
I'm forging ahead with my XL project.....

Yeah, I'm glad he did it too. I trust his opinion and methodologies. Someone knowledgable with credentials like his had to address this openly already. I enjoy working on my plane when I have the time. The past year's been kind of up in the air watching and waiting too much to make it as enjoyable as I'd like. Makes me look forward to getting back to work on the thing.

Hello Friends
Watching, listening, building, a little commenting to fouls about "this" once in a while and sorry I did.
The perfect article I was specting to read. From a real qualified and World Famous Pilot and Builder.
Printing it, binding it and leaving it in our local airport lounge tomorrow... Where all the local "Zenith Experts" are talking when I am not there... All of them Never had seen a real Flying 601 XL in their flying live! Go figure!.
