Any words of wisdom on landing light placement for the 801?

On my 801 I fabricated an aluminum plate the sandwiches between the front gear leg and the fork. This is the place I attach my tow bar to and the top surface is where I mounted my landing light. A 3" round spot beam, I took out the 55 watt halogen bulb and replaced it with a 130 watt racing one. Works good for me.. I did see an 801 at OSH, I think it was Larry Landucci',. He mounted his on the front of the landing gear just inboard of where it attaches to the brackets. he used two lights, the little oval ones. Bottom of the fuselage will shade the light from the pilots eyes and cast a nice pattern under and out in front of the plane. If I had to do mine over again I probably do it his way...

Thanks Ben. Do you have any up close and personal shots of your mount. Super sharp plane by the way.

On my Kitfox I made a bar that I attach across the fueslage bottom to
my float attach points using clevis pins. I have three tabs welded to it
and use Halogen driving lights on it. I have a quick disconnect plug
so I can unplug the bar when not using it. Time on or off is about 2
minutes. On my 125hp Kitfox, I have flown it with three 6" Driving lights
and don't notice any reduction in cruise or climb speed and I look like
a 747 when on final approach to land. I feed the lamps via a 12V 60A
relay.
Here's a pic of the bar when I was in the process of first installing it

Another nice thing is light reflected off the belly gives me great ground
illumination in the flare. Particularly helpfull in a taildragger.
Probably going to put a detachable light bar system on my 801 as well.
I have wingtip halogens as well in the Kitfox but have never been happy
with them.

Jeff,
That's right up my alley. Thanks!
I need to rig the entire lighting system so this is a big help.

I think people discount the light bar idea, it works really well and is very
convenient. Especially since it is easily removable. I leave it on all the
time though. It looks cool as well, and I have had a lot of comments
at the airport when people see it. Not to mention favorable comments
over the radio from jealous pilots holding short when they see how
well I am lighting the runway on final.
When I built my Kitfox I put halogen wingtip lights in it. Personally I was
never happy with them. They were difficult to align, and I never did get
good runway illumination. Putting on the light bar worked great. The
lights are big, they are close to the fueslage and probably well inside
the turbulated air along the bottom so they don't produce a lot of drag.
With the big halogens I can aim the plane and illuminate the runway
all the way on final. Reflected light off the belly easily illuminates the
ground under the plane on short final which really helps in the tail
dragger at night. Anybody who has landed a taildragger at night
will know exactly what I mean, since it can be a hair raising feeling
flaring into a dark void when you can't see over the nose. I think
in a trigear it will be even better.
I welded the light bar together myself in an evening, it took a LOT less
time to put together than fitting the lenses to the tips for the wingtip
lights, were I to do it all over I would have never put in the tip lights
to begin with.
I think if I built a Lancair I would probably not think about a light bar,
but on a utility plane ... I think they are a great solution.
Regards,
Jeff
