The most important lesson I've learned on this repair is that the lo-adhesion sealant, PR 1428, is VERY difficult to remove.  It's rubbery and the surface is slick.  The correct sealant, PS 890, will scrape and tear off in chunks.  The 1428 is like silly putty; it'll stretch and then slip out of the needle nose pliers.  So far, I've got 30 hours in cleaning out the old sealant.

I'm having a helluva time getting the 1428 out from between the spar and the wing skin.  It's globbed in and I can't get it out.  The really bad part is that the 1428 closes off 90% of the gap, lengthwise between the ribs, between the spar and wing skin.  The 1428 completely fills the gap and is about 1/2 inch thick along the spar.

Any ideas?

I've tried thin scrapers.  I can't get the scraper more than about 1/8 inch before the scraper gets stuck.

I tried a hacksaw blade to see if I could cut it down.  It won't cut.

I'm going to try dental floss to see if I can cut it away from the spar.

Safety wire?

Punt.....Remove wings skins...take about an hour with a good heat gun.....install new wing skins....probably take less time than more scraping and will give plenty of access room to reseal tanks.. Garner has new wing skins already bent or you can bend your own like this:

and next page

While your at it get STC to put Yankee leading edge on Tiger wing!

An off-the-wall idea: how about a "hot wire" knife like they use to
cut foam? Try it outside the tank first. Wink
