Today, June 16, 2008 at 11:10AM CST my instructor signed me off for my first solo. N5SL and I left the earth in a great leap and climbed to pattern altitude in record time. I turned crosswind, downwind, then base and final and brought us back to earth for a truly memorable occasion. What a ride! I did several more before I had to lock her up and get off to work for at least part of the day.
She flies a lot faster and climbs like crazy with just my 170 lbs. I can't wait to get to the airport tomorrow and practice some more. One of the notoriously shy hangar dwellers walked over and told me how good he thought my engine sounded. He didn't even notice I was flying alone for the first time! My daughters got my t-shirt and colored it up with sharpies and I treasure it. Thinking of making a frame of some kind. What a great day!

Hey Scott, great news, congratulations!!!
Sounds like as you did a perfect job. By the way, I am jealous about your engine sound. The "music" of the 912S on my XL won't be even close to what your airplane must sound...
Cheers Martin

Congratulations Scott!
So you're taking lessons in your own plane then? That's cool. I was under the impression you already had a license though. Good luck with everything. Sounds like you have a good instructor being that he's willing to give you lessons in a experimental.

Scott,
Congratulations!!! Flying an airplane SOLO, that you built SOLO, from scratch, has to rank up there with the greatest!

Congratulations !!!
A huge day made even better because you did it in a plane you built.
As for finding instructors to teach in an experimental. Folks just need to find REAL instructors and not time builders. I've already got 2 that have offered free BFRs just to fly in my yet completed plane. The difference being the real instructors love airplanes and not just the idea of sitting in the right seat of a flying bus.

My first solo was 20 years ago next Thursday. That started me on the path
that has me in my own airplane. You're doing something I waited far too long
to do. Congratulations!

Scott, I soloed in a Cessna 172. I envy you for the fact that you get to fly and do your cross country flights in your own aircraft. I am still building, but flying a Cessna, so it is not all bad. Congrats! Now the fun begins. It is amazing how much more you will learn after the Solo.

Scott,
Way to go! I know how exciting my first solo was, and I can't imagine what it would have been like in my own hand built airplane.
Congratulations from Virginia!

Thanks guys!
It continues to be a great experience. Yesterday I got up early and went out to the airport. I topped off the tanks and went flying. I just flew around and looked at stuff. By myself. WOW! That was a great experience. That was another first for me to go to the airport by myself and just fly around.
A piper cub was getting fuel during one of my touch-and-go's and he radio'd me to ask what kind of an engine I had. He he said he liked the sound of it. More than anything, I get comments about how my engine sounds. No more questions about what color it is going to be.
If you are building right now, just get it built. Don't worry about green vs red scotch-brite or painting vs. polishing or powder-coating or changing the design in any way - just get it built and fly it because it is a blast.
