I have a question for those of you that have painted your aircraft. Did you
paint the inside of the fiberglass cowling or just leave it bare?

On my Kitfox I left it unpainted, never had any problems.

Hi Mark,
I found no reason to paint insides of the cowl. Reasons not to are
excess weight, possible need for additions,
flammability (air-cooled engines and exhaust) replacement or repair of
fasteners, condition check of the fiberglass.

Jeff and Larry.
Thanks for your reply. I had thought as much but it never hurts to get
advice.

Bare, but I would probably paint it next time, easier to clean when painted

Bob and Mark
Clayton, our technical counselor recently visited our 3 W Montana 601XL projects. He had the same concern as Bob. My notes on his comment were:
"CW suggested mixing West System Epoxy, diluting ~50-50 with MEK, and painting that onto the inside of the fiberglass-epoxy cowling, to keep the cowling from absorbing oil from the engine."
I don't have personal experience here, but I think that his advice has been consistently good.

On the inner side of my 801 cowl I did shoot a single coat of Imron just to make it look nice. I should have gone the build up route and then shot some paint on it. As it is now the surface is still porous and gets dirty pretty fast.. My 2 cents worth.
