RV Listers,
Grove makes a streamlined, airfoiled landing gear for the RV-8. Saves having to use the fiberglass. They also have the brake line embedded within the gear leg. Over all, they weigh a few pounds less.
Does anyone have any experience with these gear legs? What is the cost differential over the stock ones? Do they fit as good or better than stock?
Should an RV-8 builder bother with the hassle of deleting the stock ones from the Van's kit and ordering these?
And another historic question... Why-o-why did Van's get away from the super sweet looking swept-back, Whitman-style gear on the RV-8? The spring steel, forward facing gear on the RV-8 just look dopy...

Better in every aspect except price. They probably cost about 2000$ and vans
will take 500 off. Well worth it. j

I'm doing the Grove gear and though my plane is a long way from flying I can tell you that the groves are very nice indeed. Cost is obviously a factor but I felt it was worth it. I guess only time will tell when I taxi/take off/land the first time.

I have the non-airfoil shaped Grove gear on my -8 and have about 350 hours on them so far. First of all the gear has performed flawlessly and was a very easy retrofit. I always seem to take a bit of a hit for my position but I believe you ought to strongly consider the non-airfoil gear as well. The reason being is that first, they are about six pounds lighter than the airfoil shaped gear and seventeen pounds lighter than Van's steel gear. I verified this against the steel gear that I still have in my basement (they're for sale if anyone is interested in a good deal). Second, they're less expensive than the airfoil shaped gear. And third, you really don't save much time with regard to the fiberglass. I used the fiberglass gear fairing Mark Frederick sells for the F-1 Rocket. It's a perfect fit and extremely easy to attach. You simply glue the trailing edge together and you're done. The rectangular shape of the gear automatically aligns the fiberglass fairing. If you want top and bottom intersection fairings, like most people do, you still have install them on with the airfoil shaped gear. If you make your own that's where most of the fiberglass work comes into play. The only real benefit to the airfoil shaped gear in my opinion is if your really want a polished aluminum gear. But the loss of six pound, especially up front for an -8, is pretty significant.

Yes C But>> I have the airfoil gear on my 8 and they are SWEEEET. If you can afford the difference it is worth it. And the drilled brake lines are great.
