Hi Andrew, Gary Gabbard here, CJ N22YK.. A few years ago I had the same thing happen, It turned out to be a intake leak, one of the three induction intake tube drain fittings had snapped off at the elbow where it screwed into the intake tube. Idled at about 36%, fixed leak, and it went back to normal idle speed..So the first thing I would do is look for a induction leak... Good Hunting... Gary

Andrew,

It could also be carb ice. You are into winter down-under and Queenstown is more chilly than Auckland. Cold & moist I would think. If you were running up at 46% to warm the oil, then pulled the power off, ice in the carb will prevent a low idle. Work the throttle a bit and it may clear. If it is carb ice, be very wary because if your approach to landing is a low power, ice may prevent you from getting the power completely off on rollout. Dicey if you have a short runway.

I get the problem in Vancouver, Canada in late fall and early spring when it is cold and moist, if I have not reinstalled the heat tubes that feed into the back of the carb.

None come to mind. They have pretty well polarized to being either very good or in need of engine/cover, but the price has to be free to make those worth buying. Somewhere I have a map of the locations of all existing US S-2A’s. If you’re interested contact me off line and I’ll see if I can find it. Inasmuch as I put 350-450 hours of dual-given into mine every year, I am constantly having conversations about them.
