Good going!!! My prop was delivered Fedex Freight last week (early),
and I had a discussion with the truck driver over requesting 'liftgate
service' for the engine. Who freighted the engine????

Well, it all worked well and the engine was delivered without charge.
However, a week later, I was invoiced by USF Holland for a $94
"liftgate service delivery" charge. Hmmmmm.
I'm thinking that few if any builders would ever be able to take
delivery other than by "liftgate". I don't have a forklift or a
loading dock, do you?
I called Holland and got no where. I called Vans and they pointed me
at Lycoming. After faxing the invoice a few times and a little back
and forth, Lycoming agreed that I should not be charged and will take
care of it.
I personally think it was a "gee with fuel prices hitting the roof
let's make sure we squeeze revenue from anywhere we can" charge from
the shipping company. I sympathize. However, if it had been a
legitimate charge, they would have insisted on acceptance before
operating the lift gate.
In any case, everyone did what they should have. Thanks Vans and
Lycoming for getting it resolved.

Yep, I've been aware of the various options for pick up at the shipping company and the possibility of lift gate delivery charges, etc. I shipped my emp kit to a build center and my fuse and wings via "that guy who does direct deliveries from Vans" and the Finishing kit was via ABFS. Interestingly, a lift gate charge was required for the Finishing kit but no additional charge was levied - just the 'delivery to home location with limited access' note on the delivery.
I expected 'free delivery' of the engine which is what I got. I also expected if there were any additional/optional charges that I would be notified of them before incurring them, by Vans and/or Lycoming. I also expect the shipping company to be 'accountable'; if the goods are damaged I'm not going to accept shipment, if the bill is incomplete or unpaid, they won't drop it. At least not to a home location. I didn't expect to get a bill 2 weeks later out of the blue. But it was all good in the end which is what I wanted to share.
The trailer thing is a good approach. I was planning that because I have access to some trailers but only needed them for the build center to home run. Thanks to my gear-head neighbor and his complete array of tractors, bulldozers, mowers and trailers. He rocks!
So William, where are you going to be in Oshkosh (GAC or something?).

Since then, instead of having the shipping company home deliver, I rent a UHaul RT trailer and go pick it up from the local shipping facility. You can then unpack the kit while the box is still on the RT trailer at your leisure. Rental for the RT trailer is less than $30 per 24 hours and you usually save about $80 to eliminate the home delivery portion from the freight company. I've done this with all the kits following the empcone and it has worked out really well. This may not have helped since you were not aware of the "lift-gate service delivery" charge, but something to consider. Oh, the FWF kit is pretty small in comparison and I think came via UPS. Of the three kits I have the first two were dropped off (with liftgate) by FedX and I paid on the spot, the last one was dropped off and 1 week later I received a bill for everything including the use of a liftgate- $75. Not sure if it is new billing this year or just a change in the way Van's has an agreement with the shippers.

In my area of SoCal FedX Freight will send the liftgate by default for a
home delivery, (not business address). I asked the first time my kit was to
arrive, one needs to specify you do not want a liftgate and in that case the
driver watches and does not, nor is "permitted" to help unload the freight..
