I seem to have a new problem after the last oil change. At startup, warm-up and takeoff it is a steady 69-72. After about 15 Min's in the air it starts fluctuating from 79-92. It was even higher (99), with the Rotax oil filter. I changed to an after-market and it came down about 10 lbs. I checked the Oil Sender connections. The engine is running great otherwise so I'm not sure whats wrong. Any Ideas? Thanks

Rich

I ran into the same thing and eliminated the problem by not filling the oil
tank to the high level mark. Changing the filter may have dropped the oil
level just enough to accomplish the same thing but like you I changed
senders and filters and got the same results. My pressure would indicate
little spikes on the needle and eventually just peg the thing. I have to
admit it was a little unnerving the first time I glanced at my gage and saw
the needle pegged. I thought sure I spun a bearing but the oil temps stayed
steady.

Thanks for the reinforcement Dave. I was going to order a pressure sender tomorrow but will hold off for now. I don't like changes that occur without reason. I use the EIS so all my readouts are digital and it really jumps around after 15 minutes or so. Otherwise it is rock solid and runs cool and smooth. I can't help but think its instrumentation. (I hope so). If I find out anything else, Ill post it. thanks again

I also have EIS and my oil press reads 99 at idle, but in cruise oil
press reads normal although it jumps around a bit. When i pull the
power back for landing the press goes to 99 again. I temporialy
installed a oil press gage and it read normal at all rpms so I suspect
it is the Rotax press sender, which is expensive. Some have suggested
it should be mounted on the firewall.

Hi Guys,

I would not think the oil pressure is really at 99psi. You need to check this against a mechanical gage which I think will show you your pressure is normal. My first thought is the oil pressure sensor wire is too close to an energy producing wire. Move your oil pressure sender wire away from all energy producing wires.

Roger, Another alternative is that it has a poor connection. If a wire
breaks or becomes disconnected the default reading is very high, as I
discovered once just after take off in the middle of France. Reconnecting it
sorted it. Regards, David Joyce, G-XSDJ

Has happened to me(wildly varying oil pressure). Replaced the sender unit
but no difference. Finally tracked it down to the wire fractured at the
connector to the sender unit.

The tefzel outer was still intact and gave no indication to the broken wire.
Finally found it by moving the sender wire with the engine running. The wire
was secured better re-crimped, and the original sender has now done 400 hrs.

Rotax mechanic here suggested planes with dynamically balanced props seem to
suffer less of these types of problems.

Others experience maybe quite different.

Hi All,

Wires and not the gages are typically notorious for false readings on gages. This is the first place I always look along with the mechanical gage. Ground's and power supply's should be the first thing checked. It is usually the easiest and cheapest.

Note*
I will have to say sometimes finding a bad wire can be like looking for a ghost. The partial ground that I stated above took me 4 hours to find because the test meter said there was a ground.
Now I have a few simple quick test. I will bypass the gage ground or power supply and use a jumper wire for a quick and dirty test. The mechanical gage setup is so cheap and easy to make everyone should have one in their tools and diagnostic equipment.

Let us know what you find Rich. The more experience we all post the easier it is for the next guy.

I installed a new oil pressure sender today from GRT who makes the EIS. Went flying with it and the pressure was 57 on start-up and about 62 for 15 mins. in the air. Then it started climbing in spurts up to 90 so I came home. Still looking..........

Oh Ya, I forgot to say that when I throttle back to land, the oil pressure drops back to normal (67-72). While taxiing in, it was a steady 57.

???

Try and hook up a new temporary ground wire and then try it. Just take a jumper wire and bypass the original ground wire. tell us what happens.

Nailed it. Thank you Roger and all who helped me in my search. What it turned out to be was the Ground Wire from the Battery to the engine. It read 10 ohms and when I wiggled it, went to 0 ohms. I puddled solder into the crimp then took it up for a test. The Oil Pressure was rock solid from 57 to 62 during a 30 min flight. The other good thing is during my search I found another possible problem in the suction Oil Line from the Oil Cooler to the engine. It is the Blue Oil Line they sell and the Radius was 3 inches and had started to crimp under the firesleeve. I replaced the line and widened out the radius with some brass fittings. I think I will go to rigid oil lines. Anyway, thanks to all and the Kitfox/Rotax is an awsome combination.

Rich

Rich,

Best not to replace the flex oil line with metal. Have you noticed the
degree of vibration on start and stop? You will tear up any metal lines
on the engine side of the firewall. By the same token, always follow
good manufacturing practice and AC43.13 when it comes to bend
radius and the other 5 or 6 rules of flex hose use.

Good point and thanks Ira. The oil line ends up very close to the exhaust manifold, 1/2", and I am thinking of ordering some exhaust wrap (header wrap) to shield it. At this moment I am also looking at rerouting the oil line but there don't seem to be many options. It is running and flying great but I have to keep my eye on that area. It doesn't show any signs of overheating the oil line yet though.

Keep a real close eye on that solder joint. After a few hours you may find
cracking at the edge of where the solder permeated the wire. I have a
friend who used to do the same fix on older cars. The fix lasted less than
a year on average. A new crimp fitting would last a long time.

Hi Rich,

I wrapped my exhaust pipes on my Filght Design CT. I wrapped the header coming right out of the exhaust and down to the muffler including the knuckled joint. It has made a world of difference in high temps in the immediate area of the exhaust pipes and no more blow-by of exhaust gases out past the joint. This made all my surrounding hoses and wires and engine mounts much cooler. The header wrap I used is the 2" and then over wrap each inch. My exhaust pipe was 15" long and took about 74" of 2" wrap. After I land I can actually put my hand on my exhaust pipes. The wrap company claims a 70% decrease in temps, but who knows the real truth. You will not notice any difference if you have EGT probes. I have a Dynon system and it didn't make a bit of difference in my temps.
You can by the wrap at most automotive stores. 50' is about $45. I would recommend the header wrap to anyone. Flight Design gave me a factory approval with out any problems.

I checked my local auto store and the price was $56 for 50' so I went to Aircraft Spruce and got the "Exhaust insulating wrap" at 1" x 15' at $12 w/shipping. Think that is all I need for that area. I hope I don't cause a hot spot but I didnt know and after Roger said he is using it everywhere, it sounds good. I use the Dynon D-100 also.

I also ordered a #6 multistrand with crimp on lugs to replace that ground wire I soldered. I am out in the sticks so the auto stores only have big wire and lugs. I agree on the solder having limited life. Sure fixed my oil sender problem though.

The new radius of that oil line from the suction input to the oil cooler is 6" vs 3 inches now by using some brass extensions on the cooler. The 43.13 is great if you read it right. That bad oil hose had 160 hours on it with no signs of overheating from the exhaust even though it was within 1/2" It is right in front where the ram air blows directly on it which may have helped.

thanks
Rich
