I am a little confused on the above subject. The Rotax Line Maintenance Manual Check List, Section 05-20, page 11, sub-section 2.2.13 Spark Plugs, b) Replacing Spark Plugs shows a foot note 1 at the 100 hour interval (or annually), which ever comes first. The foot note simply states only applicable for engine types 912S/ULS/ULSFR. I am confused about these designations as they would or would not apply to a 912UL. I have a 912UL and need to know if I am to replace the plugs at 100 hrs (or annually which ever comes first). What is the replacement interval for a 912UL?

Hi Hugh,

The manual does state 100 hrs., but in the Rotax classes they would like to see them changed at 75 hrs. For the price of your hide, the plane and your engine's health that's cheap. I change all the planes I work on at 75 hrs. and oil at 50 hrs. if no 100LL. If they use mostly 100LL I change the oil at 25 hrs. and then the plugs at 50 hrs. If you change plugs at 75 hrs. that's only about $.30-$.40 cents per hour for all 8 plugs.

Hugh,

On our 912UL we change our spark plugs "on condition". We inspect and regap them at ever oil change, which for us using autogas almost exclusively, is 50 hour intervals. They were changed at the time we bought the airplane (270 hours time in service) and we've changed them twice since then, now with 580+ hours in service. They are worn noticeably but not all that much by 150 hours, so that is when we've changed them thus far. They are cheap so you can change them every month if you want, but if you are not using 100LL fuel and you inspect and regap at every oil change they will go a long time before needing replacement. After changing them at 150 hours I've not been able to tell any performance or operational difference in the least.

If I owned stock in NGK, I might change them more often Smile.
