Here is a email that I received from one of my friends and I think it is worth seeing, especially you float plane guys.

Larry, Oregon
Subject: Dolly take-off... You have seen thousands of float planes come
and go...but I'll bet you haven't seen one take off like this. Video was
taken in Prince George, BC....and got to give the pilot full marks for
guts. I imagine you only get one shot at this.--.. notice the fire truck
following them... they obviously had a few doubts themselves.

"Anyway, you have probably heard in "aviation lore" about all sorts of
things pilots have attempted with airplanes. Well, be prepared to witness
one of them. When a floatplane is landed on the grass and taken to the
hangar for maintenance, obviously it has to depart once again. Landing a
floatplane o n grass is easier than becoming airborne on grass. This is
where "Dolly" comes in. Put the aircraft on a "dolly", fire it up, tow it
down the runway, and once a certain speed is attained, push the throttle
to "Warp Factor 9", and you are airborne. Get ready, here is how the good
people at Hill Aircraft Service Ltd. in Prince George, B.C., accomplish a
"dolly take-off"!"

Hi Larry,
Great video. Looked like he nearly overtook the tow vehicle though!

(Now a non-Kolb story)

I saw something similar in 1976, one of the funniest aviation events
I've ever witnessed. One of my instructors did a 'skid' takeoff with a
Maule on floats on a 2,400 grass runway. The location was Napoleon, MI
(3NP) and was at that time the home of Maule Aircraft (prior to their move
to Moultrie, GA). The skid was 2 sheets of plywood separated by some wood
stringers, towed by Ray Maule behind his huge Olds Toronado. Pilot gets in
the plane, which is on the plywood, and the wood is connected to the Olds by
150' or so of ropes. After warm-up, pilot gives the signal and away they
go. Just past midfield, the Maule throttle was opened wide. This was where
things got interesting. The Maule, great STOL plane that it is, claws its
way upward - with the plywood still underneath the floats! (The
low-pressure area underneath was holding the wood in place.) Pilot knew
this would happen, and banked sharply right in a peel-off. The plywood, now
free, spirals toward poor Ray in the Olds like some demented wooden kite.
He's running out of runway, but keeps his foot down. After about 3 big
loops, the wood crashes onto the sod with amazing force. We are all on the
ground, howling at the sight. Went out with a trailer and some bags to
clean up, but there was little more than big toothpicks left! They used the
same procedure after that. Incidentally, the pilot was Brian VanWagnen, now
an American Airlines captain, who still restores small planes and lives near
the airport. He was teaching Charlie Hillard in multiengine seaplanes
(Grumman Mallards) just before he was lost in the Sea Fury. Quite a
character, in a good way.

Ed in JXN,

Good story but if this happened before BJ Maule moved to Moultrie, then it had to have happened long before 1976. I went to visit BJ to see his amazing STOL aircraft in the flesh in 1971 when I lived in Atlanta, and he was definitely in Moultrie when I saw him there. I had some PA-11 tail wheel time at the time so he took me for a spin letting me fly the left seat. Of course I babied it (180 hp model, not the big engine ones) and was amazed at its performance compared to what I'd flown before.

We landed and he said get out an stand over there by the hangar door and watch this, and don't move no matter what I do. So I stood there in the open hangar door and he taxied out a ways on the ramp spun around gave it full throttle and was taking off right at me and jumped off the ground and climbed out over my head and the hangar. Yikes!

Of course this can be done with a good Kolb now days but it was quite an amazing feat for a heavy GA airplane.

Looks like one good flying story leads to another. Wonder what will come next.

I bet Ed got dyslexic with his 6's & 7's, Maule moved to Moultrie in
1968, so the story was probably from 1967, instead of 1976.

Hi Rev,

No, they still had a small crew here. Still got my logbooks! Ray
closed the remains in 1977, left me and a few others on GI Bill flight
training in the lurch. It all worked out, I finished in 1980 at a local
community college. BD had rocking chairs throughout the hangar, he'd sit
and watch workers and figure out designs, or improve production methods.
Similar to Thomas Edison, who had cots throughout his buildings where he
would take cat-naps throughout the day.

I've been accused of being psychic though. (Or was it psychotic?)

Non Kolb-related Maule history follows - (slow day here-)

I went to work for the FAA in 1973, air traffic controller at Albany GA,
just down the road from Moultrie where the Maule factory was at.
Sometime in that period, BD Maule dredged a lake right between the
factory and the road, planted a few trees here and there around the
edges, and was well on the way to having a nice scenic little seaplane
base to view as you headed out of town. Unfortunately, the lake sprung a
leak, a sinkhole or something opened up, and his lake went dry for a
while. Eventually he got it plugged and able to hold water, turned out
nice, but for a while there it was source of humor for the locals...
