|

I had the chance to look over the new canopy on the 650 and it is much
simpler than the 601. No more cables or aluminum fairings! Much more head
room for taller guys. The folks in the tent say that Zenith will make a
retro fit canopy kit for 601 builders for a couple of grand that will
include the new roll bar! Seeing that I cracked my canopy, this might be the
way to go. All I have to do is buy a new rudder and I have a 650! Almost. My
hats off to the zodiac gang for making some great new changes. The new 750
also looks like a winner. This sure makes Oshkosh exciting this year! E-mail
me if you want me to send you some pictures I took today.

Joe
Did they say why the rudder changed?
did they say why the other improvements at all?

The canopy change is obvious. The current canopy SUCKS. It is complex and hard to build.
As far as the rudder they probably did it for the same reason Cessna back in day. It looks better.
Just because a company makes a change doesn't mean that there was something wrong with the earlier version. When the 601 was first designed the LSA rules were a dream. When the XL was designed the LSA rules had not been written and factory production of the plane was probably at best an after thought.
Nobody asks why when Chevy updates their pick-up truck.

When I first saw the new one, Imy first thought was that homebuilders would
love it.
I'm still of two minds about it, purely from an owning standpoint: less
baggage room, and not hidden from view.
