Hi, 

Update for people who do not use the Grumman Gang email server. 



At the Oshkosh AYA forum, John Sjaardema showed his front vent insert that replaces the old louvers with a pair of eyeball vents for each side ($80 for the set). 

 

He also displayed a prototype for a new air vent airbox and is looking for feedback on the design and interest in members for possible production.

I see two potential problems with these vents from  looking at the photos, which granted is not a very good way to make a  judgment.

  

 They are made of plastic which is not nearly as  durable as the aluminum vents and typically cost much  less.

  

 They are relatively small diameter compared to the  original vents and most likely the air velocity will be quite high which is not  usually desirable.  Generally you want lots of air flow and low velocity  and the original vents did a pretty good job in this  regard.

  

 Van's Aircraft sells a much larger diameter swivel  ball vent that is made from hard anodized aluminum.   It has a round  inlet and would have to have some adapter duct to connect it with the Grumman  NACA inlet, so it would not be an easy installation.  Maybe the new ducts  will turn out to be a good alternative to the original.  I'd like to hear  from someone who has installed them.  Sure would be nice if they were black  instead of white.

Cliff, I bought a set of them at the convention. Mine are black. Work and 

other commitments have prevented me from installing them yet. I saw Levy had 

posted to the Nazi list that he has a set installed and he is pleased with 

his. John advised if I am not pleased with them just send them back and he 

would be happy to give me a full refund. I'll post once I have mine in. I 

hope to get them in next week one day as I want to get them in while it's 

still hot...

One clarification on the airbox version.  John said this was a prototype, so the material, color, and finish don't reflect the final product yet. I understand the final version would be black and some sort of hard plastic. The forward end is sized to fit the rectangular opening in the fuselage (same dimension opening as the existing airbox) and will have a screen built into the airbox.

I am surprised that Levy would put a part on  his plane that does not have the proper paperwork. As in no PMA or other FAA  requirements....interesting

  

 Any one concerned about the lack of paperwork  and the legality of installing these parts?

Hi, I saw the vents.  My only thought was they are the plastic eyeball vents and I wonder how long they will last.  Not a bad idea.  I wish they were more . . . .  professional? looking.

It wouldn't stop me from flying, but something so obvious I would try seeking legality sooner than later.  A field approval shouldn't be hard if properly documented.  You even might be able to argue that it is a minor alteration.  You're just replacing one piece of non-structural, non-flight safety critical piece of plastic with another, and it's just an air vent for people not equipment cooling.



For my new panel, I've purchased anodized aluminum eyeball vents from Stein Air, probably similar to the ones from Vans.  I just have to construct a fiberglass piece to mate with the existing rectangular NACA inlet on one side and a 2 inch SCAT tube on the other.  Bob S suggested that a 2 inch vent may not suffice on really hot days.  Since I'm not sure a 3" vent exists, I may experiment with two 2" vents per side.

if you look at the panel on the world's most perfect Tiger on my web site, Restoration page, I installed 2 round eyeball vents on each side in 2001. Â They work great.
