Lynn,
In one picture there is an extra plate on the back of the Grove gear with a
threaded hole in it. Is this for a specific purpose?
I am interested in putting skis on my plane at some point and this looks
like a step in that direction.

Yup, that's what it is...a ski mount pivot plate. I used 3/4"
diameter custom-made bolt...sort of like a shoulder bolt, (also know
as a stripper bolt in the punch press circles)...and the inner
support for the ski pivots on this bolt. The threads are 5/8"-18 NF.
