Old sugar/ethanol plants used to drop their garbage into the rivers and also
polluted the air very much. Nowadays, there are filters and water treatment.
The government inspects closely the process and the industry does not
pollute anymore. Fines are heavy. The only problem is that the farmers still
burn the field to facilitate the handcutting of cane. Laws determine that
the use of fire will end in two years and the majority of farmers are using
big machines to collect the cane, so it's not necessary to burn the leaves
up and production is faster.
The bagasse is burnt to run the boilers or are hidrolized to feed confined
cattle, and some refuses are used in animal food and other are put back over
plantation as fertilizer.
Water is not added to the cane itself, but used in cooling and cleaning. The
sugar cane is naturally made of more than 70% water. It's different from
making alchool from corn or grains, wich have to be wet before fermentation.
The treated water is given back to the sources.
Of course the process is not perfect, but is getting a lot less dangerous
for the enviroment.

Just wondering out loud.... Can ethanol be made with sewage water??? Or is
it too toxic for the fermentation process? Funny i never considered the
whole idea of water necessary for production.
