Is there a recommended height the oil tank on a 912ULS should be mounted at? Is there such a thing as mounting the tank too low or too high compared to the centerline of the engine? Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

Check your 912 Installation Manual. In the 914 Installation Manual it is Chapter 13) Lubrication System, Section 13.6) Feasible position and location of the oil tank.
"The oil tank (1) has to be positioned in its z-axis such that the oil level (2) is always between 0 and -400 mm (-15.75 in.) on the z-axis.
WARNING: At higher location of the oil tank oil might trickle through clearances
at bearings into crankcakse during longer periods of engine stop. If
fitted too low it might badly effect the oil circuit."
If you do not have a copy of the 912ULS Installation Manual, go to the Rotax Owners Assistance Site ( http://www.rotax-onwer.com/ ) and download a pdf.
I'd also recommend registering as a Rotax owner so that you can receive notification of service bulletins, etc.

Scott,
Look at Lockwood Installation Tips. The document explains the proper installation height and has pictures. The height is critical to proper oil distribution.

Real men don't read instructions. Kitfox owners install the oil tank above the engine.

I downloaded the Installation manual for the 912 uls and the specs are the same as posted for the 914. Thanks to all!

Scott

As mentioned in the prior listing, on the Kitfox the tank is too high. As a result when you don't fly for a while the oil migrates down into the engine and you could have a hydraulic lock. It is a real pain! Plus you have to turn the engine for about 75 turns or more to get the oil back in the tank. I suppose if you left it long enough you could unport the tube in the oil tank and suck in air (not a good thing)
Realistically though I don't know where else you could put the tank in this installation except in your lap. There isn't any room.
