Builders,

I am looking for some dimensions for strut fairings for the 701. I have a little extra .016 sheet that gremlins drilled wrong while I was asleep. I would like to convert it into some fairings to cover the tubes.

I'm also interested in attachment points for the fairings.

Many thanks for any info.

Since no one has chimed in with a real answer I'll offer some hearsay: I
have read (on these lists) that a 3/1 length/width ratio in the cross
section's profile is the ideal.

The usual disclaimers: your millage may vary, offer null where void,
contents under pressure, keep away from children or politicians, rotate your
tires, don't stare into the sun, look both ways when crossing the freeway,
use in a well ventilated space, may contain peanuts or have been processed
on a planet that contains peanuts, this work is protected by international
copyright conventions.

Tommy
I faired my struts with 016 as you are planning. Made a big difference. It was also a surprising amount of work(as usual), took several days off and on. I made a fixture for shaping the 016, it doesn't really like to bend in a proper leading edge radius, as I am sure you already know. I made them up in 4 foot "blanks" and then cut to fit. That put a joint about in the middle. I put one pop rivet at each end and the jury strut bolt holds it in the middle. The blanks were 8" wide before bending mostly because that works out for a 2x4 sheet of material and gets somewhere around the 3 to 1 ratio somebody mentioned but I wasn't too concerned about that.
You aren't too far from my place...I think this fixture might fit in a 701 if you want to come borrow it. It took a little while to build it.

A few scratch built CH 701 in Australia use streamline Alloy as used on the Lightwing seems to work well.
I will be using same when I get to that stage. (approx 3inch wide)

Works great, but have you checked the price? It's out of sight.

Thanks Joe, I will take you up on that. It looks like it will be this fall before I get to that part of building this second plane.

There are a lot of old Cub struts around that were removed and replaced with the lifetime no AD ones that might be a good source of streamline material if you are into scrounging and you are a welder and can allso determine to your satisfaction that they are strong enough ... I had a set I was gonna fab up some struts with but they were so rusty I didn't. The cross section isn't 3 to 1 but I thought it would be ok for me anyway. They are often cheap as in near free.

Steven,

Out of sight in deed! What I have found so far is about 10 times the cost of chromalloy tube. It appears that they are hard to manufacture and are prone to cracking.
