All,
Since I am working on my rear fuselage, I was wanting some input about
antenna locations and backing plates. I think it would be easier to prep
for antenna mounting now, instead of when everything is put together, in
the way, and not easy to reach. I have seen where the COMM antenna is at
the very back of the baggage compartment, then the cable runs through
the baggage back. This was done for easyness to reach the connector for
any work that needed to be done.
I am assuming a backing plate of around 0.032 or 0.040 and 3"x3" should
be enough for a whip comm antenna.
Also, where are some of your transponder antennas mounted? I also have
an extra tail/rear access panel, so mounting a transponder antenna
farther on the tail "should" be easy to do.
Pictures would be helpfull of your setups

Mine was CZAW built and came with a 6" x 4" approx. plate aft of the baggage bukhead. Access is difficult since the baggage compartment is extended and working on the connection requires going in thru the panel underneath. I used this location for the VHF com, running the cable down to the floor and under the rudder cable. Transponder is under the seat in a fuel drain hole that already had a doubler plate I didnt use for the fuel system - I fitted another mount for UHF antenna just forward of the seat box which would have been OK for a transponder. I have another VHF on the top corner behind the roof window and HF wire on the other corner running out to the wingtip - anchored about 1/3 way back to rear fin.
My photos dont show enough detail I will add the antennas I used are flexible tapered ss whip type, would not recommend any of the GA Fglass or the cheaper bent rod type antenna that has no taper because no matter what doubler you use the .016 skin will crumple whenever the antenna snags something, also the cheapest transponder antenna that looks like a rod crimped into a BNC connector is fragile my supplier sells about 1 per week when they get knocked off from aircraft washing - I would have bought the deluxe "STC'd version if I had known that

Keith,
Regarding the transponder installation, some units require an antenna cable no longer than 6 feet. You may want to check with your avionics guy or Bob Nuckoll's website for your specific transponder.
I have a KT-76A with the antenna on the cabin floor, between the firewall and right rudder pedals. I haven't flown yet, but my avionics guy says the antenna placement is fine.
Regarding the com antenna, I placed mine on the top skin behind the baggage back (leave enough room for 7C6-4 - forward fin!). I added an access panel in the baggage back for accessibility to the antenna. Hindsight being 20/20, I would much rather have placed the antenna just ahead of the baggage back for ease of maintenance. I'll enclose pics.
I used a .040" backing plate along with 'L' brackets attached to the frame.

List, Please forgive me for going off-topic here, but Dan, what is the substance brushed on the aluminum in your 2nd (interior) photo of the antenna?

Sorry Mark, but I can't remember the name of the product. It does two things: it acts as a corrosion inhibitor and supposed to stiffen the .016 aluminum to prevent 'oil-canning'. Although it seems to work well as a corrosion inhibitor, it doesn't help with the oil canning so much. That's why I added the diagonal 'L' brackets (which work great!).
Another 20/20 hindsight: zinc chromate or Cortec would have worked just as well as that crap and probably would weigh a lot less.
