FireFlyer's

After almost 250 hours, two of the left wing aileron hinge pins were showing
wear to the point that when one shook the trailing edge of the aileron up
and down, you could hear the pins clicking in the bores. The inner most
hinge pin had been replaced once before, and so I thought I would do
something a little different. I purchased some 3/32 inch OD brass tubing
and cut it into 1/2 inch long pieces with the idea of gluing them into the
hinge bores with acrylic cement. And then using a matching smaller hinge
pin. But then Richard Girard told me about the use of Teflon tubing. And
so I went this route. If you are interested, you can see how it was done
at:

The aileron control horn pivot bolt passes through a hole in the inner most
steel rib. There is enough clearance between the bolt and hole that it will
rattle too. I figured out how to shim it with a thin wall brass tubing that
is adjustable so that as wear continues one can simply rotate a nut and
remove the undesirable clearance. How this was done can be seen at the same
jump as listed above.

After making these repairs, I thought that surely, I had removed all play
from the left aileron control system. But when I shook the aileron again, I
discovered that the aileron push-pull rod end rod bearings were worn to the
point that they rattled too. When TNK gets back from Oshkosh, I will order
replacements.

One other bit of news. Ed and Pat Diebil stopped by on their way home from
Oshkosh. We spent a full day of talking about FireFlys. It was great. Ed
has a sharp eye, and picked up, that I had not completed my FireFly. He
showed me that I had left out some rivets on the upper rudder hinge. So it
pays to have someone else look at your plane.

Fly safe.

A little follow-up. I did replace all the rod end bearings, and it did
help. But, when I wobble the trailing edge of the aileron up and down there
is still a clicking noise. I traced the noise to the where the "Tee" bar
pivot tube passes through the load bearing tube at the bottom of the yoke
assembly that connects to the boom through bolt.

Currently, without hearing protection and the engine running, one can not
hear the aileron hinges or pivots slapping. I will try to slide a brass
shim stock strip inbetween the pivot tube OD and the load bearing tube ID to
take up the slack.

Fly safe.
