Hi Guys,
Can anyone tell me what brand of premium gas is best for my Rotax 912S?? I live in Las Vegas,Nv in case it's different from State to State.
I was told to put gas into a glass jar like an Olive jar and shake it well & Ethanol will show on the bottom. If it is over 10% don't use it. Any ideas??
Thanks,
Dale

Don't know which brand is best but as far as testing for ethanol it is a
little more involved. See EAA Test Kit at:

Dale,
I don't think there is any point in testing for the presence of EtOH.
It is now mandated to be in all consumer automotive gasoline in all
states in the US.
This is why corn prices have skyrocketed and food is more expensive.
To my knowledge the standard concentration is 10%, except of course for
E85 which is 85%. Again no point in testing which was only useful years
ago, before the Gas companies all switched from other oxidant agents
to EtOH. Someone should let EAA and AOPA know that their kits are
pointless now. The EAA STC for auto gas is also useless now because
it specifically excludes EtOH-gas.
E10 is demonstrably safe in Rotax engines as long as you keep in mind
its limitations. No, the company will not write it down.
E10 will give you a fraction less horsepower (less than 5% drop)
E10 has a lower vapor pressure (but I don't know by how much) so
avoid very high density altitude operation. For the sake of safety,
I'll guess above FL150. If someone has better informed data, please
tell me.
E10 will gum up and eventually dissolve old rubber and cork gaskets
and hoses such as in old Lycoming and Continentals. I have none in my
Europa. If you built your AC then you know what you put in it. Otherwise
get your airframe manufacturer to spill the beans for you re precisely
which components are EtOH sensitive and what non-sensitive components
can be used for replacement.
E10 is not going away anytime soon, we might as well adapt safely.

Ira - I respectfully and strongly disagree with your statements about
ethanol testing being "pointless" and "useless"; in fact I believe there has
never been a better time for most people to be aware of what is in the
gasoline that powers the machines we entrust our lives to.
I was unaware of the dangers until reading about it on this list and doing
some research myself. My 1989 KF2's fuel system was seriously damaged by
just one tankfull of 6% ethanol gasoline, and the 582's performance was
noticeably down. My test kit has allowed me to find and verify ethanol-free
premium and use that until I replace all of the rubber elements in my fuel
system.
In a sport/industry where safety is critical to survival it would be
foolhardy to ignore changes that effect the plane's ability to fly safely. I
agree that ethanol may be inevitable, but safety and informed knowledge
about what goes in our fuel tanks cannot be understated.
If I misread your first paragraphs about testing for ethanol being
pointless, I apologise. Your last statement "E10 is not going away anytime
soon, we might as well adapt safely." I couldn't agree with more - but
"adapt" to me means "be aware of your fuel system's ability to handle
ethanol, test for ethanol if there is *any* doubt, and do whatever is
necessary to adapt the system to handle ethanol in future".
