Installing new steel gear legs on Mk-3 Classic ?

I recently bought an unused pair of steel (high rise) gear legs from a fellow lister to replace my original aluminum legs.
Just spent the afternoon trying to set my alignment and get them both the same.
I have the plane hanging from the hanger roof and a center line string pulled from the tail wheel to the nose hoop.
Can't seem to figure out how to hold the legs in position while measuring alignment.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Hi,
Just finished doing the same thing with my Firestar. Take the wheels off the axels and put them in the fittings on the inside of the legs. ( to the middle) and then take a flat piece of steel and clamp the axles to the steel. This will give you a straight line across with no toe in. As it was explained to me the steel legs don't need to have windage built in as is needed in the alum legs. It is a bit more sensitive without the toe in, but not a problem after you get used to it and the plane accelerates a lot faster without the drag of the toe in.
As with all advice, it is worth what you paid for it, but I like mine that way. This was suggested to me by Terry Davis, and I appreciate it, and like it.

Denny,

If I understand your problem right and you are having trouble keeping the legs from sliding out you should be able to use a c-clamp or c-clamp vise grips. Place them over the steel gear leg socket and squeeze just enough to compress to contact the gear leg. This should make them stay put. If I dont understand what you are up against.........never mind .

If that is the case with them clamped in position, you can either lower them until they contact the floor, or tie them up with the clamped bar.

Hi Denny.

Here is how I did mine. I jacked the plane up and put blocks under the cage just about where the gear legs go in. Pushed the new legs up to the mark that was put on them by Kolb , the marks tells you how far to push them up in the tube. I too two pieces of 5/8 rod about 12 inches each and pushed them on the axel holes.. I then took a piece of one inch angle iron that bought at tractor supply that was long enough to reach each axel.. Clamped that with C-clamps to the 5/8 rod and that will give you straight alignment with 0 toe in or toe out.. Worked great for me. You know we should take pictures when we do things like this so we can show others. I think I will from now on.

As you probably know already, the steel legs provide a new angular perspective to deal with.The old straight legs could be adjusted at the axle only.
Coming from an inexperienced point of view, I would use some guesswork on the legs and
then adjust the axles at a happy midpoint for an initial setting.
All the above would have to be done under full load. -no hanging from supports, etc.
Let us know regarding progress as I may go the same route eventually.

I'll be off to the local metal supplier in the morning for the 5/8" rod for alligning the axles, that is a great idea and as simple as it gets.

Hey Denny -

Here's the cheapest way to do it: Go to Home Depot and buy a "grounding
rod," like what electricians use for grounding a house. It's 5/8 inch
diameter, smooth, copper plated, and about 6 feet long. You can use it
to pass thru BOTH gear fittings at once, thus eliminating the need for
the angle iron and clamps.

Hey guys the angle of the axels will not allow a solid piece of 5.8 rod
to pass through them. I don't think they get that way even with full weight
on them unless you have a couple guys in the plane. If we are talking about
the new steel gear from Kolb, the hollow tubing.
