I'm building a Zenith 601 XL and would like to hear a good discussion of why or why not to use either a 0-235 Lycoming or a 0-200 Continental. Good or bad experiences are appreciated.
Thank you,
Darrell Haas

The O-235 (not 0-; the O is for "opposed") provides some extra horsepower
over the O-200, at the cost of enough weight that the actual gain in flight
is not that much. If you're trying to make the LSA weight and speed limits,
the O-200 is plenty. Bob Archibald, at Dragonfly Aviation in Santa Rosa, CA,
has both (an E-LSA version with an O-235, and an AMD with an O-200), and
would be a good guy to discuss the choice with.

Hi Darrell,
The 4 factory new engines which seem to be popular on the XL include the two you mentioned (O-200, and O235),the Rotax 912S, and Jabiru 3300. The first three all produce around 100 horsepower while the Jabiru is more powerful at either 120 or 130 depending on who you ask. The Lycoming and Continental engines seem to come in around 100 pounds heavier than the other two when you are all finished. I have not been able to find the reason for that, but I think it might involve the amount of equipment included in the factory weight quote. I think the Lycoming and Continental don't include accessories included in the Rotax and Jabiru specs like starters, alternators, and magnetos.
As you would expect, the performance generally shown for the three 100 HP engines is considerably less than the Jabiru equipped planes.
I have heard rumors that the Rotax reliability may not be wonderful. However, the other three seem to have very good reputations in that area.
I chose the Jabiru for my plane since it provides a distinct performance advantage. Others may choose other engines and I don't have any reason to say they are making a mistake.
