Hi folks,

I noticed something weird with my brake fluid -- in the lower foot or
so of nylon tubing, all the way into the calipers, the fluid color
has changed to pretty much clear (maybe very slightly pink), whereas
the fluid in the rest of the visible tubing remains the usual red
(5606 fluid). Aircraft has been indoors. The transition is a sharp
line. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I'll flush and bleed with
new fluid unless someone thinks this is not a sign that I need new
fluid. Plane hasn't been in service yet, but fluid is at least two years old.

Bill

I'm using the Automatic Transmission Fluid in mine. It's a red color, but in the
portion of the line that is exposed to light it has went clear. I suspect the
coloring is added to the fluid partially for identification purposes as petroleum
products are not naturally red. I also believe that the coloring is affected by
light and will dissipate, and did so in mine fairly quickly. I've put over 70
hours on my airplane and the brakes work just fine even with the liquid being
clear.

I'd leave it alone. The dye that they use is probably not color fast in the
presence of light. It just faded. My Kolb is the same way.
