I just looked over the Rotamax website, and I am very intregued by the concept.
3 moving parts. What a potential for simpler and safer. Plus a weight savings to boot.
Does anyone know of anyone planning to use this engine in a 650 or 701/750/801?

Welcome to the Zenith 701/801 list. I hope you are able to get the
information that you are looking for and that you build the world's greatest
homebuilt. I wish I were able to help you as you gather information about
which plane/engine combination is best. It may be possible that CAN-ZAC is
a franchise of Zenith Air, or ZenAir, or whatever it's called and lists all
the engines that you can bolt onto the front of a 701 firewall. I can't
speak for Mark T. but I've found him to be open and forthright about
responding to questions. I doubt many of the regular builders here have
enough information about the 750 to make intelligent responses.
I think you asked if any of the listers were scientists or engineers. I am
not a scientist or engineer but my father was an engineer. He worked for
Southern Railway for 40 years. Started out as a fireman, shoveling coal
into those big steam engine boiler fireboxes. He later became a diesel
locomotive engineer and kept his hand on the throttle until retirement. 
I never could do anything so I became a school teacher. As Woody Allen
said, ".them that can't, teach. Them that can't teach, teach gym.." I was
obviously educated beyond my intelligence and proved it. 
I am enjoying building my second 701 though. If light is your goal, you
can't go wrong with the STOL 701. I have a friend in Tennessee who is
building a 701 with an O-200 as his engine source. He doesn't post on this
list but does read it, I believe. So, there are 701's with O-200's. A used
Continental was my second choice for the 701 I'm building now, primarily due
to availability and cost. I found a good 912ULS though and went with that.
I would bet that the Jabiru would be a great engine match for the 750, not
sure about the 701, but James in Arizona has made it work. That is a lot of
power for the lowly 701, isn't it? But I guess you can't have too much of a
good thing. Like I said earlier, we have 496 lbs left for fuel and crew,
so we can fly longer than we want to sit in a 701.
I wish I could lay out some exact figures for you to help you along your
path, but again, I'm not that smart.

I've been following the discussion about the Jab 3300 and the 912S and would
like to offer the following as another possibility for an engine. I have
ordered a Rotamax rotary engine to replace my Suzuki 1.6L. No experience
with the engine and operating on blind faith and the spirit of experimental
aviation. Look at the engine at www.rotamax.net and I think you will be
impressed with its potential.

Good on you , Jim. As you said, that's why their called experimental. I saw the
demo at Osh, really large rotors and they are flying in a couple of aircraft
they said. If you live anywhere near Ohio, they might cut a deal to to use your
craft as a test bed. Good Luck.

I flew my 601XL/Jab3300 down to Shelbyville, Tn for an EAA breakfast
yesterday and saw a beautiful 701 being flown by Pete of Jab USA (I
believe Pete said it first flew Friday 22 August). It had Jab 2200
((Eight-five (85)horsepower)) engine installed.

airplane, except the one Pete was flying was painted and beautifully
finished.
I asked Pete if a 3300 would be better and his reply was (if I recall
correctly) that for the 701 you really do not need the power of the
3300.
That Jab sure did sound sweet and take-off was .. SHORT.. like a 701
does best.
If I were building a 701, I would seriously consider the Jab 2200, based
on my experience with the Jab 3300.

Now the 80hp Jabiru is a bit cheaper that either of the 912 Rotaxes but
they have
lost quite a bit of their price advantage over the last few years.
Personally,
I would not have even considered the Jabiru 80hp as a STOL engine but I
have
to admit the pictures of George Race's first flight that he just posted
shows
that it is capable of getting off the ground very quickly. I now have
significanly
more respect for this installation."
