|
|
This morning I took off from my home strip about 8 am for a short flight
before heading off to work. The wind was calm and the takeoff short as
usual. On climbing to altitude, I noticed my airspeed was 80 mph but
ground speed was 110 mph. I did a series of landings at a neighboring
airport where the surface winds were light. Going back home, the
tailwind I had earlier was now a headwind of 30 mph so this slowed my
progress considerably.
On reaching home, the no wind condition on my runway had turned into a
20 mph wind with a 20 degree crosswind component. The tall trees at the
upwind end of the runway were shaking so I knew this was going to be a
challenge with my narrow runway. I lined up on final and fought the
turbulence trying to keep the nose centered on the runway. Once over
the almond trees on the south end of the runway, I cut the throttle,
lifted the nose slightly and let it settle in. No problem. God I love
this airplane!
