I should have checked the FAA registry. It was a 601XL. News reported the airplane flying low over an elementary school, engine sputtering, then the crash. There was no post-crash fire.

Does anyone know what engine was installed?

If I am correct and have looked it up right, it was a Corvair engine.  http://www.flycorvair.com/hangar0307.html shows a picture of it with his name. It is the same plane that is shown on the news channel picture. Sad. Very sad.

Very sad indeed.

Here is a photo of the crash scene, and the aircraft is unrecognizable

That's the photo I saw on our local news. I recognized it as a 601 by the
stabilizer tip fairings and the rudder . From the thickness of the wing
portion on the right side, I thought it was an HD. Obviously I was wrong
about that.

Sad, indeed!

I went to the crash site and took a few pictures with my cell phone camera.

It was an Corvair powered XL. I have spent many an hour in his hanger chatting him up about it. The last time I talked with Ken he said he had some issues with his carburetor. He went so far as to talk to WW at Arlington about it and ways to resolve it. He got his sign off last week and <pure> I guess he didn't have all the kinks out of his carb. </speculation>

Ken is the reason I started building, and the reason I decided to use a Corvair. With him gone, there is a big hole where my motivation used to be.

I’m sorry for your loss, Lee. Good friends are hard to lose and it’ll
take a considerable while for you to look on this with an unemotional
perspective. Take heart knowing that you will, eventually. I’d recommend
giving it some time and not selling the project just yet.

The issues he had with the carburetor will be of considerable interest
to Corvair builders and persons using carbs per se. Do you have any
specific idea of the difficulties he was experiencing with his fuel system?

Respectfully,

I don't ever want to know what its like to loose a buddy in an experimental
crash, especially when it's something like this. Sorry for your loss Lee.

Looking at the crash damage, it looks like he stalled and went straight
down. Usually, the FAA will site the cause as pilot error, for stalling the
plane, with a secondary factory of engine problems, but he probably had no
place to land and tried to keep it in the air, thus the stall.

Carb problems don't need to equal crash, so lets all learn from this and
keep our planes near the runway and away from population until we have
sorted out these problems. It's always best to play it safe, especially when
you know there is a problem, and work it out where you can make a safe
landing if necessary.

We had a simular situation here at Lawrence Airport MA. It was a Corvair
engine too in a KR-2. It was a first flight. The plane took off, but
the engine did not maintain enough power to climb, so the pilot kept
the plane flying as long as he could and put it in the tree tops. It
dropped straight down, but the pilot walked away. He went to the hospital
for further examination and they found that one of his kidneys was
injured. During his surgery they discovered a cancerous tumor and
removed his kidney. So the accident actually saved his life. He has
decided to go LSA, because of all the hastle he had to go through just
to get his private ticket back. He is also a good friend too. Sorry for
your loss, Lee.

I try my best to never speculate when it comes to these kinds of things. Having very little flight experience I have little to draw on to even try to draw any conclusions.

Here is what I know: He got his MA3-SPA from a friend that works a western avionics here in Spokane. He got it installed using WW intake. He had his son-in-law put the engine together for him using a lot of WW parts and had the crank nitrided by Nitron. The last time I was at the hanger it seemed he was having mixture issues and after playing with the mixture, he would get it running smooth just before it cut out. After that there was a lot of head scratching. At this point he hadn't had it signed off yet, so he wasn't even thinking about flying.

He discovered he needed a new part for it (I don't recall exactly what) but this was during the handoff between the people that WERE making the parts for the MA3 to the people that currently ARE making the parts. (this took like 3 months to get it the part squared away). At Arlington, he mentioned he had the part installed but it would still stumble occasionally. (still no airworthiness sign off yet). He tried a few more things (talking to as many people as he could at Arlington to get ideas, including WW). WW even gave him a new E/P distributor to try.

After Arlington I hadn't talked to Ken until I read about the crash in the paper. So I don't know exactly what happened between Arlington and Friday. He has a friend that was helping him (an ex-CFI and A&P) get his systems worked out, so he had plenty of information and experience to draw from, and I'm sure he took it.

Here is an ever-so-small bit of speculation on my part so please take this with a grain of salt, and I am not discounting Ken's experience as a pilot or his integrity when I state this: He sold his Piper Tomahawk for the funds to buy his 601 kit. That was almost 5 years ago. The last time we spoke, he mentioned that he hadn't flown in all that time. There is the slightest of possibilities that he was a little rusty behind the stick (even with 30+ years of flying behind him).

As we all know, it is almost never a single event, action or inaction that kills pilots. It is a chain of events that overtake them. I don't believe it was just a carburetor issue that killed my friend. It was a chain of events that led to his untimely demise. Alas, we will never know the pure truth that caused the accident.
When I talked to my Wife Jody about flying, she said to me "I am not going to make you stop flying because of this." I will continue doing what I'm doing and learn from this tragedy.

Thank you all for your kind words, now, back to building.

Hello listers:

As the guy who started this thread by noting the Hayden Lake crash on the list, I'd like to thank you all for the sober, respectful and helpful tone of your comments. It's been a good example of the way the list should work for all of us. Thanks again,

George

Lee-
I'm surprised there was a problem with a MA3-SPA, because that's what
I'm using.
Was his carb yellow tagged? I'm not trying to stir things up, just
making sure I did everything I could to avoid trouble.

This is really sad. As someone who recently had an "Incident", I can just say that things happen really fast up there. Especially when they go wrong. I recently ripped the landing gear off a Remos G3 and and walked away. It was pretty scary and I haven't been up since. The speed at which things go from good to bad is incredible. And I did that with a working engine. The news story said that he clipped a building. I wonder if he was aiming for an open field by the school and just ran out of room. My heart goes out to his family.

John
