Our 601 HDS is
on the gear and I got to set in it for the first time and
make airplane noises.
However, when I put my feet on the pedals they contact the arch of
my foot and the ball of my big toe hits the toe brake bar
. When I push the pedal in a natural motion to move the
rudder, the brake is depressed. My heal rests on the
floor, between the rudder pedal and the crossing
stiffening member. Is this the normal set up? We don’t
have the seat cushions in yet, so that will elevate the
pilot forward and up some, but I don’t think the geometry
of the knee will change much. I am five eleven (on a good
day) and my partner is over six feet. The general feel is
much bigger than I thought it would be. It seems much
roomier than a 150 and the nose is much higher when you
sit in it without cushions. We could easily adjust the
rudders pedals now, much harder later. My question is, does this
observation mean we have an issue or am I missing

I had the same problem. My solution was to add blocks to the rudder pedal so as not to be depressing the brakes when operating the rudder pedals. I am surprised they haven't fixed that by now.

Phill,
I have an HDS that has almost 4 years of flying on it. I am 6'1" and my toes hit the brakes in there normal position. I did a simple fix when I was building the plane. I cut the toe brake links off and relocated them forward and welded them in place. I then shotened and re-threaded the brake rods in the cylinders to shorten them. Now there is room between my foot and the toe brake bar. Make sure you don't get them too far forward so that your toes hit the firewall.

I do not have the problem on my HDS (1999 Kit). I am 6' even and have
size 9 shoes.

I just reread your message and decided I need to elaborate a bit. My
rudder pedals are as far forward as ZAC recommended. With rudder in
neutral, the toe brake bar is angled forward 15 degrees. My heels rest
on the heel rest.

If you do not have he brakes bled and under pressure, you are making an issue out of nothing. Set the brakes and pedal to the distance desired, then bleed and apply pressure. you will find it takes lots of forward foot motion to apply brakes. Alot more than you think, which works well when applying peddle work and brake work. It is not as touchy as you think.
Flight it first, then reset it.

Phill,
I found out about the issue when I was test flying a 601HD in Canada while I was building mine. I was told to move my heels back and put my toes on the pivot point so I would not be on the brakes when I landed. When I got he brake pedals I saw that the balls of my feet would be on the brakes so I added 1 1/2 inches to the pedal. The next year at Oshkosh at the builders dinner I went over to Chris Hientz and put my foot next to his. A hah I said, he asked what I was doing, I told him I found why the pedals are too small. I have a size 12 foot and he must have about a size 7. With the extra length I can easily control the rudder and brakes separately.

We tiewrapted a piece of hose to pivot bar and cut some thread off cylinder rods to move operating bar forward & since then have added aluminium plates so brakes will actual hold aircraft for run-up of continental 0-200 picture attached you could weld a plate on if you have access.
Do not find a problem with this as you have to apply positive pressure to top of plate for brakes to have any effect. I am size 7 but Ray is much larger 12 I think.
