Wade, you might want to check with Marc Dickensheets at www.whiteindustries.com . They usually have a big assortment of breakers               Rick

Hi Wade,

One much less costly alternative is to use fuses instead of circuit breakers. That's what I have used in my plane. Bob Nuckolls at Aeroelectric Connection is a fan of fuses, here's an article he wrote in Sport Plane aviation: http://www.aeroelectric.com/articles/fuseorcb.html

Per the recommendation of Aeroelectric, and to save weight, I used fuses
for everything but the alternator field circuit in my 601HD/Stratus.

Wade--
All good suggestions so far. Another alternative is the EXP Power distribution panel. It uses thermal resettable breakers along with main breaker and power distribution on a PC board

They are kinda cool. So cool in fact I bought one. I then started looking at my power and switch needs and realized it wasn't the best option for my plane. I sold here to somebody.

Hi Wade:

I ended up with 11 different circuit breakers in my panel and I did not combine any pieces of equipment. They range in size from 1 amp to 15 amp.

I felt it was much more efficient, and of course costly, to use breakers rather than fuses. Nothing to me is worse than trying to find the right size spare and insert it in the socket, especially while in flight.

I did want aircraft quality breakers of either the push-pull type or push-push type. Both types have an indicating ring when tripped that you can easily see on the panel.

I ended up purchasing them from Allied Electronics after a lot of looking for a good price on the web. Depending on their amperage they average around $15.00 each. The ones that I am using are the push-push type of breaker. Here is a link to one of the spec sheets: http://www.alliedelec.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?SKU=6770197&MPN=2-5700-IG1-K10-DD-2A&R=6770197&SEARCH=6770197&DESC=2-5700-IG1-K10-DD-2A

That particular one is a 2A breaker, and they do have screw terminals, which was another on of my requirements.

Another place to look that I know has a lot of great panel building stuff, including breakers, is SteinAir. They have very good prices on a lot of stuff including the Grand Rapids EIS. Check out their web site at: http://www.steinair.com/home.htm they have a pile of stuff for home builders.

While we're on the subject of fuses, has anyone had any experience with the "if it glows it blows" fuses? These have a little LED that lights if the fuse is blown. I've been thinking about switching to them. I believe they come in the regular blade format.

Leinad

I work in a power plant. We use the fuses that you are describing. They work very well. If and when a fuse blowes a LED will light and stay lighted until the fuse is replaced or power is removed. The only problem is the fuses we have are metric sizes and a little harder to find. Radio Shack sells the common sizes.
I don't know how they will hold up in a plane with viberation and changing humidity all the time. But in a panel in a control room they work with no problems.

Hope this helps some.

Van's designed the LED fuses into the panel of the RV-12:
