hi all,
i have always been bothered a bit by anchor nuts and their thread locking ability. surely after enough use that quality is gone. all the ones i have seen are rivited and that makes replacement a pain and a chore. and the hole for the rivit wont be so tight next time. most anchor nuts are secured by 3/32 dia. rivits. i am in the process of installing them for my cowling and parts of my pressure plenum. these nuts will get used regularly. anyway..... a #3 flathead machine screw is about a perfect match for a 3/32 rivit. 100 screws and nuts was about $2 plus shipping from mcmaster-carr. you can see where this is going, anyone tried this? any input would be appreciated.

Bob,
A reasonable idea. However, when my anchor nuts loose their bite I give them a gentle squeeze with the vice grips and they're good as new. I don't want to discourage you from your screwing adventure, though.

Bob, just make sure the places you use screws in place of rivets are fairly accessible to get the washers and nuts on. I used screws in a lot of places instead of rivets and some are a bear to get the nuts and washers on and off. Often it is easier and much faster to drill out rivets than to take screws out.
When drilling out the rivets to be replaced use a letter drill that is a hair smaller than the drill used to make the hole for the rivet. This helps to reduce the enlargement of the hole. If it is non structural it won't hurt anything anyhow. The new rivet will expand to tighten in a slightly oversize hole.

for what it'sworth..... i got my stash of #3 flathead machine screws and nuts from mcmaster-carr and they work very slick to mount an anchor nut instead of a 3/32 rivit. a number 40 drill and a 13/64 drill ground to an 85 deg tip. i may use this method on some that will get frequent use. then again squeezing old anchor nuts with vicegrips to get the locking action back sounds good too.
