I have my GPS 496 in an Air Gizmo holder in my panel
After expending considerable anxiety trying to decide where to put the 2 antennas for my 496 (principal nav device) unit. I decided against putting them on a shelf in the engine compartment. I put them both on the glare-shield on the advice of Bob at Garmin. I hard wired and screwed the GPS antenna into the glare-shield. The XM is another case........
You have to procure two (2) metric M3x6 screws to fit the bottom of the XM antenna. You want to make the XM antenna removable form the aircraft so that (if you want) you can get satellite weather at home. I fabricated a bracket that fits on top of the glare-shield and is removable. The XM antenna is screwed to the bracket and the bracket unhooks from the glare-shield with one screw. You also need a 1/4" hole in the top of the glare-shield to push the wire and mini-USB cable through. My first though was to get another XM antenna. NO NO NO...... The XM WX subscription is dedicated to the antenna NOT the GPS 496 unit.
Many thanks to Bob at Garmin Aviation division

Not sure why putting the gps antennas under the cowling isn't good idea. except for the XM, rest of gps antennas are under cowl and work great. 530. 496,AFS, etc. 496 is mounted on gizmo bracket with usual cables hard wired to back. ran the XM 'extension' that is available thru small hole thru glare-shield and brought it out by center pole at base of glare-shield. the end of the extension just sits there--hardly able to see it. plug the xm hockey puck into it and good to go. no mounting. it sits there during takeoff, etc. works great. unplug and your ready to use it in another setting. simple, no fuss. larry b.
