To the fiberglass gurus out there:

I'd like to fill in the gap on the inside of the wing tip and smooth it
out. I didn't do a great job of getting the line straight when I
trimmed the gap between the wing tip and the aileron. What's the best
way to do this? On the elevator tips we were able to get to the
back side and use some Styrofoam to build it up. Here we have the
metal from the support to work against. How have others' done this. I
have seen a few show planes with all the elevator and wing tips filled.
Is Styrofoam ok to use to fill the space? Any links to websites?

Thanks in advance.

Waiting on paper work and DAR. Taxi test done this weekend. 10 more
knots and she would have been airborne. To all the other builders who
haven't flown yet. Get started on the paperwork 3 months before you
think you might fly. I should be worrying about what Vx and Vy are
for my plane and not trying to fill in cosmetic stuff during the
prettiest days of the whole year!.

Rigid foam will work, or even a piece of balsa or something similar. The
thing to remember is that you need to glass over the filler or you will
probably end up with a paint crack at the joint line.

Another way to straighten up the line, if you don't care about filling the
interior, is to extend the upper and lower skins by glassing a flat sheet
onto the upper and lower surfaces of the tip. Think of it as replacing the
part that got cut off. You can lay up a coupon of fiberglass on a smooth,
flat surface to make some sheet material. Then put it in place inside the
wingtip and glue it down with flox and resin. Then bodywork the new seam.

Clear as mud? Give me a call if I can explain it better.
