Lynn:
What ignition system are you going to be using? If you wrote about it on the jabiruengines list, I missed it.

Gary and Jose-
I'm in the process of installing the Electroair Direct Fire Ignition
System (www.electroair.net/) as we speak (so to speak)....it's a
really impressive system, with very professional-looking harnesses,
attachments, terminals, spark plug wires, etc. Because this is a
prototype for the Jabiru using a crankshaft trigger wheel, I'm having
to make my own brackets to mount the two magnetic pickups. Ordinarily
on a Jabiru, they would supply a magneto timing housing (MTH) to
replace one of the distributors, and the installation would be a lot
simpler. Because I wanted to eliminate altogether the distributors,
caps and rotors, as well as the shafts and gears that drive the dist
shafts, I asked them to design a system that would use their
crankshaft trigger wheel and utilize two magnetic pickups instead of
their normal one, as used on other engines. This will involve me
making the brackets, positioning the two pickups a certain distance
apart, and then attaching them onto my home made brackets, the job
will take a little longer. Based on my success with the building,
they will design a bracket that they will build and then market as
part of an alternate way to go with the Jabiru ignition kit.
No, Jose, I haven't written much (yet) about this system on the
jabiruengines, Yahoo list, because I really just got into installing
it. I'll post over there and on the Matronics Jabiru engines list
when I know more.
Right now I'm making a mounting plate for the in-cabin controllers,
and I need to go get a larger hole saw for lightening holes. Next
will come the mounting brackets for the coils, which will get mounted
onto the firewall. Then I'll go after the pickup-mounting brackets. I
started with the Kitfox-mounted stuff first, because those were the
hardest to access...I decided to remove my glare shield to enable
easier access to the back of the instrument panel (for my system, 4
new breakers will be installed), and after the airplane-mounted stuff
is installed I'll start on the Jabiru engine-related stuff. I'll keep
track of my time and report back to them so they can have some idea
of whether or not this system takes more time than their other,
already-in-the-field-and-proven ignition kits.
