When installing wiring, what is considered the ideal length for service loops? I am running a 5-wire cable to the rudder trailing edge for a combo navigation / strobe light installed in a fiberglass fairing. I don’t want too much wire where it might move around and fray against the edges of the opening in the skin behind the fairing, but I want to make sure I have enough for any possible future need. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

The answer to how much wire to leave in a service loop is purely personal. As for how to prevent chafing, wrap the loop and any other threatened segments of wire with some appropriate diameter plastic spiral wrap then secure it with cable ties. I enclosed my brake lines and some wiring in the center support channel under the cabin by making a cover for that channel. I even wrapped my brake lines with spiral wrap within that channel. If you see extensive chaffing on the spiral wrap, it is fairly easy to replace it rather than re-wire.
