Hi All,
This past week, I took N13SE, Model V, Vixen up after engine replacement, (EA81 Turbo) up for the first time. Took more than 1000 feet to get off the runway and would only climb out to 200 feet above the runway. Was able to make a gentle turn and return to the runway. I have gone thru everything and have come up with the prop being at a too low angle, causes the engine to over rev and would not get enough speed to just keep it in the air. The Ellison throttle body needed some adjustment to make it run more lean (5000 Ft elevation). The prop was set at 18 degrees where the AP put it when he did the inspection. The question is: For those of you that have the Subie Kitfoxes with Warp drive ground adjustable props, What do you have yours set at for general all around performance?
Thanks to everyone.
Ted Jacques

I think my first question would be what static RPM were you getting on the prop - to have the performance drop you experienced I would expect that you would be over the red line on your engine at WOT on the ground.

Thanks for the question. Since I am new to building and to Kitfoxes, I didn’t know I was to do that. Actually, what is “static”. Yes it does go over the redline when on the ground. I would have thought the AP would have set that properly, but I guess not. Please explain how to do that and get the angle right. Thanks.

Hi Ted

Static is "not moving". When your plane is tied down (static) your prop and engine have to work harder because all the air is being pulled through the prop. When your plane is moving forward (flying) the engine has less work to do because less air is being pulled across the blades. Less work at the same power setting means higher rpm. So, if you are over the redline when static, once you start flying you are not in a good position. Your prop is not set course enough to pull your plane through the air.
I used to set my 582 at 5800rpm static which translated to ~6250rpm in level flight. I was looking for more cruise speed so I preferred a course setting.

The web site below tells how to use the warp drive protractor to set your pitch.
http://www.warpdriveprops.com/protractor.html

Hope this helps
Brian

I agree with Brian. That is good advice, IMO. Not only does it give the 582 a better cruise (who needs to get off the ground in 100 feet anyway), better fuel consumption, and also it keeps a better load on the engine so that EGTs are more manageable. Gerry, at Greensky Adventures, an old Rotax guru gave me the same advice to use 5800 static. Worked for me and there was no more screwing around.

Ted

Brian is on the money here - I guess it all depends on your requirements as to whether you go for a climb (fine) or a cruise (coarse) setting.

Either way, if you are over the red line on the ground you will be way over in cruise - basically it's like driving your car around in 1st gear.

Over-revving can also cause serious engine damage so this really should be corrected before you fly again - What is the recommended max  RPM of your engine.

best regards

I was advised to use 6400 to get off the water with floats...on a GSC tec 7 prop. That worked but what really worked well was the Ivo IFA that replaced the GSC ( Expired). I needed a full 6800 rpm for lift off with the floats but it sure slowed down the cruise speed.
