Yes, do not remove them! I bought a Kitfox that had the springs removed and the cables replaced with solid cables so that the throttle was "pushed" open with the throttle cable. At the time I wasn't aware of the PROPER method of hooking things up. Ignornce was bliss! Worked great till one of the solid cables broke shortly after takeoff, leaving me with half an engine! Not a smooth 'half' engine, either, the engine coughing and surging and bucking, although still producing some power. It would have got me home if I had the altitude, but I couldn't climb with it!
I had little runway left but chopped the power and I swear slipped the plane sideways all the way to the ground (never have slipped any aircraft so much, before or since) and kicked it straight at the last second, pulling back on the stick and putting on the brakes as hard as I dared without nosing over! There was a line of tree stumps along the far end of the runway and I stopped with the prop less that 6 inches from a huge tree stump.
So I wouldn't advise changing the springs to a different method. Those springs ar a great safety mechanism, as I almost found out the hard way!
On my 701 I replaced the T handle on the left throttle with a regular adjustable throttle knob. Otherwise adjust the friction bar on the firewall. But don't mess with the springs! Ouch!

I had the same problem with a friction throttle. It would keep increasing RPM if I wasn't careful. I almost had a mishap while warming up one day. The RPM's were increasing and I didn't realize it. If you try to set the friction so it doesn't creep it will be hard to fine adjust the RPM's. I went to the Vernier throttle control and it works very well. There is no creep, a couple of twists to increase or decrease the RPM's or depress the button to push or pull for larger adjustments. A much, much safer arrangement in my opinion.

Can you use a vernier throttle in a two throttle system or would the lock
prevent the other throttle from moving? This would be in setup where the
copilot's throttle is just the rod with the T handle.

I removed my right hand throttle for several reasons. It had to overcome the friction of the original system system to work, it would not work at all with the Vernier throttle, it would rattle, it necessitated another hole in the firewall that noise and fumes would enter and after sitting in the right seat I found it was no problem at all to reach over and use the left hand throttle as the plane isn't very wide.
