Hello fellow aviators

I am in the process of rigging full lotus floats 1260
to my Kitfox IV 1200 with a Rotax 912S.

Of course many questions arises during the process even though i have the manuals and have searched the net and saved all pictures of interest.

However if some of you have some pictures to share it would be highly appreciated.
Closeups is extra good.
I am planning on designing my own amphib solution so any amphib pictures would also be a treat.

Good luck.

Here is what I have found... The 1260 or 1220 do not have enough flotation on the forward half of the float to allow you to put the step far enough back to be able to get on step at gross weight. With the 912 I think you will be OK but with the 582, you just cant push the nose over at gross. If you do move the floats back to get the step 6" behind the CG then you will take water over the nose of the floats if you pull back on the power to fast.

I am going to order a set of 1450's for mine this winter. The have the same length tails as the 1220's but are 15" longer in the nose. This solves the problem and works GREAT.

I also played with the angle of incidence alot to get best performance. I think i settled on 3 degrees, but don't quote me on that till I get back home and check it.

I can get install pics next week when I get back home if it will help you.

Thanks for that akflyer.

I took my rating in a IV 1200 582 on 1220 floats.
This plane had the standard kitfox rigging and got up on the step quite ok.
According to the owner he's able to operate at gross without any problems.
I guess temperature, altitude and all the the other factors also come in to play here. Hopefully i will be ok with 100 hp.
When i measured his setup he had a 3.2 degree angle between the float top and fuselage bottom.
And thats where i am aiming as well.

Looking forward to seeing your pictures.

any chance you could put me in contact with the guy that has the 1220s on his? I would be real interested in knowing where the CG is, and what gear ratio and prop he is running.

Thanks

I have a Light squared (model 4) on 1260 Full lotus floats. I went for the
slightly higher floatation and have no regrets. With my 912S I can be off
the water in less than 12 seconds. I used the Kitfox rigging and have no
problems getting on step with or without a load.

He has a 582 with a C box with 3:1ratio
and a 3 blade kiev prop, pitched so that he gets 6800 rpm at climb-out.
And cruising at 6000 rpm.
We measured the whole setup and i made notes and drawings.
I will scan and post them after the weekend.

Later

I think that my issue may be in the gear ratio. We are running 2.62:1 and 72" IVO ultralight IFA. I can jump out of the water full fuel and solo. Dual with full fuel you cant get on top of the water unless you have a 20 mph head wind. Dead calm and it is touch and go with 2 200# guys and just the 9 in the nose tank. I think the 3:1 gives a bit more thrust and that is just the edge needed to be able to get on top. I have the gears at home, but have not swapped them out yet

I did learn one little trick on the last duck hunt. I had 2 of us, 2 shotguns, couple boxes of shells and about 40 pounds of ducks in a dry bag strapped to the float. No way I could get on step... so I just ran one float up on the mud and instantly was on step and accelerating. Back into the water I went and completed a normal takeoff.

I think performance was better on the 1260's last year compared to the 1220's this year, but I am still going for a set of 1450s and am going to 3:1 gears and an IVO Med. IFA.

All of this is on the Skystar rigging which, as was layed out per skystar about 8" to far back on the floats. I had to move the floats back under the plane to get the CG at 4" ahead of the step. They still need to go further back for optimum performance (getting onto step quicker and easier) but I cant as the noses will them submerge when you pull the power off.

He said that the kievprop made a lot of difference to the performance.
He used to have a different prop, I can't remember which, and this one was a lot better.
I have ordered one myself.

However, which wing do you have on your Avid, Stol, HH or extended speed wing?
I guess that would make a lot of difference as well.
As the stol wing has a lot of undercamber it will supposedly generate more lift at slower speeds.
