I'm still working on the canopy for my 601HD. Everything is done except
installing the outside flashing and the rubber gasket. I notice that
the canopy lifts itself off the nylon support blocks on the side
opposite the side that is being lifted when I try to open it with the
outside flashing clecoed in place. I'm fairly sure that's because the
bottom of that flashing cannot move inward in the areas where it
contacts the fuselage skins fore and aft of the canopy opening, so it
kind of "pries" itself out of the blocks. This is with the hooks
disengaged all around, by the way, so there's been no damage to the
flashing or canopy frame. I trimmed off the outside flashing so it's
flush with the plexiglass at the front and back ends. Does the bottom
of the flashing also need to be trimmed so it's at least as high as the
pivot line, so it doesn't try to swing in while the canopy is being
opened? Or am I missing something completely?
Thanks for any thoughts.

Bill I'm not 100% sure I know what you are getting at but if it is what I think it is there is a perfectly good reason to trim the flashing so it doesn't extend below the frame. I noticed while doing mine that if the flashing was below frame you pretty much just built a simple yet very affective finger removing machine. Trust me, two fingers on my left hand were almost proof. The only reason they are still there is the fact that the canopy didn't come all the way down on the latch.

Bill, I guessing your canopy open to the side, per my drawing 6-E-4 dated 09-03 the flashing 94 0) is riveted to the tube 6E4-5 and is trimed just above the bottom of the tube and them bent inward around the tube. Looks like this would provide a good air leak into the cabin. Jerry of GA

Bill,
I'm going to assume that you are building the older side opener, correct? If so you will find that the flashing will have to be trimmed so that as the tube along the top longeron pivots in the nylon blocks, the plexi and the flashing are trimmed to clear the side skin. Best way to see this is to stand to one side and have someone you trust raise the other side of the canopy and see for yourself. This is probably going to be a trial and error fitting. You will end up with quite a gap that you'll fill with some type of foam insulation - either that or have chilly, breezy airtime.
You can see that typical gap of the older side opener on N601WB in the attached. Sorry I don't have a closer view. Note the cutouts for the nylon blocks.
Good luck...jeff

This is not related to your post, but I love that rudder tip. Did you make it yourself or is it for sale somewhere?

Pavel,
I made it myself following an examination and pep talk from Wayne Beattie who owns that very nice N601WB. I can send you a bit of tutorial on it if interested. It's of medium size and I don't know if you hotmail address will take it. If you have another email contact me directly.

That would be a good addition to the (nit quick but permanent) photo/file share for the list:
