Hi All,
Having recently sold our PA38 we are looking for something newer and cheaper to run.
The CH601HDS looks a likely contender but there are none local to me that I can go and look at.
My question is: how much space is there in the cockpit? The reason I ask is that I am 6'4" and 190lb. My height is mainly biased towards my legs rather than my torso.
Do any of you guys have any experience of fitting someone my size into a 601? I see that there is a very useful diagram for the 601XL on the Zenair web site.

There is also a quote from a pilot:
"Just a quick note to let u know that I am 6'4" and weigh over 250 and I fit into the Super ZODIAC nicely. I encountered lots of headroom with the bubble canopy and was very surprised with the room." - TW
His quote mentions the Super Zodiac, does he mean the HDS variant or is he referring to the XL?
Some clarification/assistance would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Kevin (Plymouth, UK)

Kevin,
I am flying a 601HD, I am 6'3" tall and about 190 lbs. The trick is to have the rudder pedal placed as far away as possible. Also by varying the thickness of the seat cushion you can add more room. I built mine with the maximum leg room, rudders all the way forward and then made my seat cushions following instruction I found on line. The first thing I found when I put it all together in the plane was that my head (headset) tended to hit the canopy. I took about two inches of padding out of the bottom of the pilots seat. That took care of that. Later I felt that I needed more leg room and I removed a 1 inch peace of foam from the seat back. There is still plenty of foam and I can easily fit in the cockpit.

Also the seat pan itself can be installed a bit lower than the plans show. I think mine still has at least an inch between the seat and the bottom of the fuselage.

Thanks guys. I am hoping to take a look at a 601HDS that is for sale in the UK. Weather permitting I might be able to see it next week.
How easy is it to adjust the rudder pedal position?
Cheers,
Kevin

Kevin,
The rudder pedal position is mostly a function of the length of the cables. I found an easier solution lengthening an aileron cable by replacing the standard turnbuckle with long one. The long turnbuckles, available from ACS are 1-3/4" longer than the standard. Given the geometry of the rudder pedals that would move the pedals ~ 3" closer to the firewall.

Don't forget the nose wheel steering rods will have to shortened as well.
