On the subject of the defrost fans;   Don't put in chrome fan gaurds, 

that is unless you don't want to install the optional gun sight.

Right....EVERYTHING on your glareshield you'll want black or dark.

I even painted the white stickers on my fans, and any screws were

black, and everything else.  That whole glareshield reflects

awfully bad.

I put a dash mat on . Same stuff Abby uses as carpet. No reflections and 

cheap. Been watching the scat tube debate and we squeezed the tube put some 

sealant around it and it dosnt move. Did think about defrost fans however 

have not needed any yet but will see.

Also we are VFR only

Defrost fans needed 5 times in the last 18 months of flying.  MOF we used them Monday AM leaving Goodland, KS ........window was 90% fog taxing to runway.  When we got to the runway window was CLEAR.  I put in the vertical squirrel cage PC fans versus the circular ones.........smaller hole to cut in the glareshield and less glare issue.  IF you ever plan to fly in humid or cool conditions I would definitely put in a defrost system.

You can also just drill a little grid of small holes and no cage is needed.  Just screw the fan on underneath the glareshield (screws going in from on top).

I got a really cool (no pun) fan at Fry's in Roseville CA. Less than $12 and it has a very small 3 speed switch on it. I put it on the dash about where I thought that I would need the defrost effect most (center left). They also sell a cheap black plastic cover that projects about 1/8" above the dash.

The fan cover is about $2.99. At these prices you can afford two fans. when they run you can barely hear them on low, but on high they really move the air.



For glare - should I just paint the dash flat black to get started and take a template of the dash for later finish work from Abbey?????  or should I do it all before the windshield goes in?????    suggestions

I find that even black painted glareshields 'reflect' off the inside of 
	


the windshield ...... and covered my glareshield in my Grumman (AA-1B) 

with speaker grille cloth.  A real improvement.  The grille cloth 

stretches and the edge was easily glued to the back side ..... used 

clothespins to hold the cloth while the glue dried.  The easy part was 

that the galreshield in the Grumman is removable while the -10 isn't 

.... so I'd do everything I could before installing the windshield.

painting. It was painted before installation of the windscreen

Hey Mike, where are you located.... you're shopping in my backyard.  I live in Granite Bay, and the build is finishing up in hanger J5 in Lincoln.  

 Got a part number for the fan?  You actually mounted it on top of the dash?  I bought a really nice piece of material at Joanne's.  Fabric made for boats and such.  Appears to have very little reflection.  I drilled out the rivets in the dash holding the doublers for the hand grips, then installed the dash material, then reinstalled the hand grips.  Also added an additional doubler underneath for additional strength.  Then the windshield went on right over the material.

 I primed the dash area before installing the windshield making sure the bonding area for the window was free of paint. Installed computer fans with black grills and am using Cleveland Tools glare shield cover http://www.cleavelandtoolstore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=GSF15. This cover was rough cut before installing the windshield and will be final installed very soon.

In my aircraft the defroster fans have been renamed to panel coolers. I have a Grand Rapids EIS6000 located at the top-center of the panel that was showing 145F internal temp with the outside temp approx 70F. Cut the holes and added 80mm fans and the temp dropped to 104F in similar conditions. My fans are turned on if the avionics are also on.

Exactly!  That's why I recommended them for EVERYONE, even if you don't

want defrost.  Bill's data shows it....you really want a way to exhaust

the hot air under the panel.....ESPECIALLY if you use front seat

heat at all.  In fact, due to the heat coming up from the front vents,

as far as I'm concerned, adding officially "heated air" ducting for

the windshield probably isn't a very worthwhile way to spend time...

you'll get plenty of heat just by running your front vents and

having the defrost fans on.  That's why on mine, the fans come on

with the master switch...it doubles as an audible reminder that you

left the master on...and it ventilates any time you're using the

plane.

Back in the good old days, DC fans were pretty noisy devices (electrical

noise that is).  What are the fans like these days?  Is there any issue

with electrical interference (particularly into the audio system) from

these devices?

determined by the avioncs choice, or can they be installed ahead of avionics 

selection and installation?

I think that if the aircraft is pointed to the south, then the

defroster/avionics cooling fans should be to the north of the windscreen,

and south of the panel in the exact apex of the curve of the larger radius

of the arc on each side of the  center post.

Depending on the fan you get, avionics, and anything else you cram in your panel, you are fairly limited by the structure.  I put mine in the two bays on either side of the cabin top support.  Didn't really see any other options given that's where most of the heat will be and also it is the flattest spot.  I also followed Deems and made a removable panel to attach them to.  This gives the added benefit of being able to reach your hand in from the top should you need to for disconnects or whatever.

 I started by looked over Tim's site and then took the plunge. In hind sight I would have moved the defrost/cooling fans aft about 1/2-1" as they are fairly close to the base of the windshield. As for side to side placement C I'm using a left of center radio stack so that pretty well dictated the placement off to the side.

  

 One side note is my radio cut out in the sub panel didn't need to go as high in the panel as it does. But when I made it I thought my radios on the top of the stack would be deeper.

Responding to best placement for fans:

 The purpose is to remove the trapped heat from under the panel and I do not believe the location matters a bit. However, the order of assembly does matter as the fans (install two) could easily interfere with the back end of the avionics.

  

 Suggest you build in the following order:

  1) Install complete panel

  2) wait

  3) think

  4) change the panel

  5) sleep on it

  6) change the panel

  7) Cut the holes and install two fans (even though all the heat is biased to one side)

   Mount GPS and/or XM radio antennas forward on the glare shield (if you desire) yet back far enough that they can be removed if necessary. 

  9) finish the rest of the plane

  10) cut a pattern for the glareshield

  11) Install the front windscreen

  12) Install the top skin just aft of the baggage compartment

  13) fly
