Hello group ,thanks for all the responses on my  panel lettering .Another request I have is : what is the battery and the source  that most of you are using .I should be able to get by with a 25 to 35 amp ,as  always the smaller physical size the better for me . Thanks

Wade,  Here is what I have done for the past four years:  During the annual Condition Inspection, I take the battery out of my Lawn Tractor.  I take it to O'Reiley's Auto Parts store, aviation section, and exchange the battery for a new $25.00, 24 pound, group U1 (36 amp. hr.), U1L (you may need a U1R), Super Start, sealed Lawn & Garden battery.  Remove the old battery from the plane, put it in the Lawn Tractor and put the new one in the plane.

I have an Odyssey PC680 battery in my plane. I bought it from eBay for about $70 four years ago. 14 lbs, 680 CCA, 17Ah.

I've got the Odyssey 680 (The non-certified version). I haven't pulled the first electron out of it but the size and weight are great for it's specs.

I am using the PC680 and it has plenty of cranking power. It also mounted nicely in rear of the fusilage, required for W&B with an 0-235.

I'm using an Oddesey 625, 15 lbs, 7" wide 6 1/2" tall, 3 3/4" deep.  I'm not flying yet, but it looks like it has plenty of power to crank the Corvair.   It's a drycell.  I purchased it from Summit Racing.

Hello group ,thanks for all the advise I received  on the battery .Using this advise I have decided to go with the Dynasty PC680 .I  will be locating it behind the passenger seat .Next question ,has anyone run  their battery leads from bat. to engine through the center console with this  battery location . Thanks

 My battery is also mounted behind the right seat. I ran the autopilot wiring, headset wiring and lighting wiring through the center console. That pretty well filled up the available space; plus I was a little concerned about electrical interference. So I ran the battery cables up under the right longeron.

 

 Have you received those panel labels?

Howdy, Wade.



I have the exact same battery in the exact same location. Not a problem a-tall. Battery relay right next to it, too.



But I'm only cranking a Corvair, so I'm assuming you're fixin' to use a Sky-Tek starter in your set up?

I have my battery in the same location. I ran my battery cables and several other power wires through the center console. I ran the wires on either side of and at the same level as the torque tube, spiral wrapped and secured to the side walls. That way there is no interference with the controls.

 I'm a long way from flying my 601XL however I intend to use the same  battery set up that I used in my previous project. I built my RV7 to use a 4.3  Chevy V-6 and used a battery layout that was a variation of a system suggested  by Jesse Meyers at Belted Airpower.

  

 Basically it consisted of two PC 545 batteries. The electrical system is  divided so that each battery powers one fuel pump and one coil. The electrical  buss is fed from whichever battery is turned on through 25 amp diodes. The  batteries are charged simultaneously through 25 amp diodes also. The only time  both batteries are used at the same time is during cranking.

  

 To me there is a big advantage to this system, in the event of an  engine failure flipping one switch changes the battery, the fuel pump and  the ignition system. I won't have to spend time thinking about where the failure  is located.

 In my Corvair installation I intend to use two oil pressure switches also.  

  

 The disadvantage is weight. 

  

 The PC545 weighs 11.7 pounds. Two of them weigh about the same as most  standard aircraft batteries but still considerably more than a PC680. In the RV  I placed the batteries behind the right seat but I needed the weight back there  anyway.

  

 I'm sure someone out there can improve on this but I like the simplicity  and easy redundancy.

No Rick ,the Sky-Tek starter is no longer available for the Franklin 

engine.So I have to use the old Prestolite .If anyone knows where an 

available Sky-Tek starter for a franklin is please let me know . Thanks

How do you feed two batteries to one starter? Do you have two starter solenoids? I can’t see you doing it through the diodes as they are too small to pass the cranking current.
