Dear Listers,

I have a question about the monowheel landing gear.  I am getting ready to mount the landing gear and my kit #A012 came with the bungee cord set-up.  I also read in my directions that in later kits past 1996 are using some sort of dampener, which I would assume to be a shock absorber of some sort.

Which is the best way to go in terms of handling and secondly maintenance?  I have one simple bungee in my Zenith CH601XL, however, I have already had to replace it in 230 hours and 3 years of flying my plane.  It basically was a pain in the rear to replace due to the fact that you have to completely drop the nose wheel to get at replacing the bungee.  I guess what I'm getting at is that all that looping of the bungee cord gives me the willies in terms of future replacement and wear issues.

Is there some off the shelf MOD that would be better?  I wait with great interest for your expertise.

Cheers,

Jeff,

If you look under the technical section of the Europa company website you will find the mod for the landing gear shocks. It has drawings, etc.

If you don't have the URL, here it is:

(jeffrey-j-paris(at)excite.com)

It would also be a good to look over all of the mods to see which ones you need to include in your build.

Happy building!!!!

Jeff / Peter

The bungee arrangement is not the main wheel suspension - merely an aid to retractiung the main gear and flap - it would otherwise be far too heavy. The main gear suspension is a large polyuerathane block (LG6). I believe the original monowheel only had this and no damping. There are now two dampers sitting within LG6 to produce less 'bounce'. Your kit should have both the bungee and LG06 / dampers

The early Classic kits did not come with the dampers (shocks). It is a mod that you have to purchase. It is included in the current XS kits. You should be able to call Europa for information and pricing. It was mod 26 released in January 1996. I told you wrong earlier. It is not listed on the web site since it was a mod for the Classic and doesn't apply to the XS. Let me know if you want a copy of the documentation. I believe I have it and can scan and email.
