RV Group,
I have an RV6, changed the oil today and noticed that the bottom cowling has a bubble about 6” in diameter next to the exhaust where it makes the bend from the manifold (closest point to the cowling), obviously the exhaust is to hot for the cowling at this point, from the out side of the cowling you can also just see the bubble. This is now a weaker area of the cowling; I did not build the airplane and am wondering what I should do about the heat first and then the cowling. The cowling may have been like this since my last oil change and perhaps will be something I deal with down the road. I can not imagine this causing a major failure but will probably just become unsightly to a point where it needs to be fixed. Any feed back is wanted and welcome.
Thank you,
John Paul

John:
Van's sells a self-adhesive foil heat shield material that you can stick on the inside of the cowl in the area where heat is a factor. Just make sure you clean the area real well so it will adhere. K2R spot remover does real well to suck oil out of the pre-preg type epoxy cowls that Vans now supplies with their kits if that is the type you have. If not, just use naphtha (coleman's lantern fuel) or lacquer thinner.

Jophn: Also you can go to Home Depot
and get the aluminum Insulation they use on homes. It comes in a roll, you
can buy what youneed and tghat is all. It comes with the adhesive ready, for
install..
It has some writing accross, if I remember is the Mgr. or name...
and it is cheap.. too..
hope this is another idea.
for you

Thank you for the suggestion I called Vans this morning and will get the heat shield on, maybe this should be some thing other RV owners should consider before they have a fiberglass issue as I now do.

John: the first thing, clean the area, sand it to clean the best way you can. not too much
then put a fine coat of super fill,(,, a two part) item goes 2 to one,, read the container
let over night.. then sand smooth.. clean. "Apply , paint I used rustoleum,
heat resistan,, I preferred white...
Once dry,,, put a wide piece of Self Adhesive, Aluminum tape, lbuy anywhere
Auto parts, Home Depot...is about 6" wide.. put a long piece right under the
Exhaust pipes. I might do as many do, perhaps a better way.. I have seen
where they use aluminum sheets instead of tape,, and over the entire inside of
the cowl....you also get that under home... at home depot,,it has like writing
all over,, my friend at the airpot did that, it looks good,,with some color inside..
and it is fully protected against heat fire etc...
Hope this will help

jOHN: YOU CAN USE THE ALUMINUM SHEETS HOME DEPOT SELLS, FOR
HOME INSULATION I BELIEVE.
CHEAPER THAN VAN'S,,SAVE SHIPPING TOO.
i USED IT WORKS GREAT... SOME OF THE FELLOWS AROUND MY AIRPORT
SUGGESTED TO ME ALSO, THEY ONLY PUT STRIP, ALONG SIDE THE
LENGTH OF THE MUFFLER, ON BOTH SIDES...IN OTHER WORDS COVERS
THE AREA BOTH SIDES INSIDE THE COWLING, WHERE THE HEAT WILL
DAMAGE THE FIBERGLASS...
NO NEED TO COVER THE ENTIRE COWLING,, BUT I DID, IT AT THE TIME..
ANOTHER SUGGESTION
