Hello friends,
Anyone out there flying an XL behind an UL 260 engine? Any comment would be great.

Hi Alberto,
I took a look at the web site for the UL 260 engine. I didn't know anything about it before looking just now.
One thing that I noticed is the engine is a very new design with very few already manufactured and shipped. This may not be a problem, but suggests the market acceptance of this engine is not yet very good. There are inevitable "Teething" pains that must be overcome with any new design. It may be that this period is not yet over for this engine. I didn't see where the engine was manufactured, but the price in Euros suggested perhaps it is some place in Europe. You may or may not have difficulties getting normal maintenance parts.
The performance specifications suggest this engine is more powerful than a Rotax 912 or Jabiru 2200 but less than a 912S and a lot less than a 3300. I guess it is sufficient for a Zodiac XL if you really want the features of this design.
The price and weight are similar to a Jabiru 3300 but the power is significantly less. The basic configuration is similar with direct drive and air only cooling, The obvious differences include 4 cylinders rather than 6 and fuel injection rather than carburetor. I think the fuel injection is highly desirable for smooth and trouble free operation, but the 4 cylinder will certainly vibrate more than a 6.
I don't know of anyone producing a FWF kit for this engine and the Zodiac. That means you need to come up with some significant parts like engine mount and cowl. There are also lesser parts like voltage regulator, starter solenoid, and battery choices to deal with. You can buy all this stuff already packaged for the Jabiru or Rotax engine choices.
I chose the Jabiru 3300 for my plane, so I am biased. Still, I think it would be wise for you to consider the two engines feature for feature before deciding which one best fits your needs.
Good luck,
Paul

I don't know of any XL flying with the UL 260, but I know there is a least one Sonex driver flying with one. His name is John Davis and supposedly, he's very happy with it.

Hi there!
there is one in the UK, maybe he is on the list. I already have one Jab 3300 for my XL but we are building two and the owner of the other AC thinks the UL is the way to go. I have my doubts given the fact that it is new, no FFW package, probably no ZAC support and nobody on the lists to give first hand impression on an 601.
Thanks a lot to all of you for the responses.
PS: The engine I believe is manufactured in Belgium
