Hi,
sorry if I get the terminology wrong for this (new to the engine details). I wanted to know if there is a recommended socket size I can use to remove the 3 intake drains if/when I experience hydraulic lock (vs. removing the plugs from the bottom 3 cylinders) ? Unfortunately I do not have any of the original Yak tools.
Thanks,
Anthony.

Anthony,
An adjustable works fine. Better yet contact Jim Kimball at http://www.jimkimballenterprises.com/site.html . Ask them for their drain kit. Pull your drain plugs, drill them out and tap them for the thread size (sorry do not remember the size because Dennis did my modification for me) then install the kit. It will not prevent hydraulic lock but it will certainly minimize the risk if you open the drain each time after flying.

Anthony, just in case you were not aware of this, oil in the intakes and
oil in the cylinders can sometimes be two different issues to start off
with anyway.
1. Any oil that gets into the intake can of course end up being sucked
into the cylinder itself and if there is enough of it... You can get a
hydraulic lock and everything that happens after that. Having an intake
drain kit, or... Pulling the intake drain plugs will help prevent that.
BUT !!!!
2. Oil can get into the cylinders via other means, so there is no
"VERSUS" when it comes to spark plugs "versus" intake drain plugs. What
I mean by this is:
A. Having an intake drain kit or pulling the intake drain plugs will
not prevent oil from getting into the cylinder by other means.
B. Once the oil gets into the cylinder enough to cause a lock, there
are only two ways to remove it. The best being.. You have to yank out
the sparkplug(s), or ... The more dangerous method... Spin the engine
over backwards which will normally send the oil from the cylinders out
into the intake tubes. Now if your intake drain plugs are already
removed when you do that, you'll PROBABLY be ok, as all that oil will
come out from those intake drain plug holes. However, if you just have
an intake drain KIT, it is possible that the smaller holes from that kit
will not allow all the oil to come out, and then when you start the
engine, you can end up sucking all that oil right back into the cylinder
again ... ruining your engine.
Bottom line, the safest method is to yank the spark plugs if you feel
any kind of abnormal resistance when pulling the prop through before
flight.
There are alternatives. There is a ball check valve in the oil pump
assy that is what allows all that oil to get in there anyway. It is
possible to fix this and then reduce the oil that gets into the engine
just sitting there. This is not really a total cure from my experience.
Another method is to install a manual valve that totally shuts off oil
from the oil reservoir tank to the engine. This method is SUPER, with
the exception that if you somehow forget to turn it on before you start
the engine, you will RUIN the engine. Various interlocks are available
to prevent this error, but nothing is perfect and this method still
scares a lot of people. Me included.
Yet another method is to install an electric pump that pumps out the
engine sump after flight. As the engine then sits there, the sump has
to fill first before it starts getting into the cylinders. If you come
by every week or so and run the sump pump, you pretty much keep ahead of
the problem. This seems to work extremely well too from what I have
seen.
The money is no object solution is to actually totally top the whole
engine and put in new cylinders and pistons. The new pistons use
gapless rings which help prevent this problem too, and with the
increased compression ratio from this kit, you can expect about another
30-40 HP or so from the engine. About 15 grand for this conversion last
I heard.
So you see, it is a problem with many approaches and solutions.

Exactly what I needed to know - thanks so much.
