It's about time someone other than Garmin makes a unit. I would imagine before long most or all of the experimental units will offer an input (GRT, AFS, etc.). Chelton already has a way to connect to the Garmin unit, so it probably will be available sooner on Tim's unit, but you can bet that AFS and GRT are hungry to get it working on their too.

I would think that if the unit can offer TIS with the
GTX-330, it won't be a stretch to add on support
for ADS-B TIS. And, if they offer XM or WSI Wx, it
won't be a stretch to add ADS-B Wx. ADS-B comes
with both, so getting them to offer it as an option
may take some programming time, but I would expect
to see it offered on any of the systems that actually
invest the time and effort into their products.
I'm just thrilled that NavWorx came along as an
alternative to the Gorilla, because the only thing
keeping me from ADS-B traffic was the cost, and now
that won't nearly be a problem. Anything over $5000
for a simple add-on though is just inexcuseable,
and Garmin just had the market cornered. I think
that will change.

Well, I kind-a like what Gorilla did with the MX-20. They took a mediocre product built on MS Windows NT, improved it and called it the MX-200. A MUCH better product with better support.

Tim-
After you have had time to digest the ADS-B setup from Navworx could you document some system diagrams for everyones education? There is TIS, TIS-B, ADS-B, etc. I would be interested in knowing how to implement this capability with a new panel and best approach to retrofit a GX430/GX330 combination.

How does Navworx offering differ from Garmin in the system sense. Same data rates? Interfaces?

Is Navworx involved with WxWorx (whom produce the xm receivers).

I can try to do some of that. I get the feeling that there is
a lot of "configurability" available, so it can work with
many systems. I don't know much about the technical specs on
the garmin, so can't give much there. I don't think NavWorx
is associated with WxWorx at all. Not 100% sure, but I haven't
seen anything to lead me to believe it is.

Will just report back after I know more. Hopefully this
poor weather forecast for the weekend doesn't change my plans.

Quick question for those who have used ADS-B. It uses a transponder/DME type antenna. Is the existing transponder antenna all you need or does it require a separate dedicated antenna?

It would be a totally different antenna for ADS-B. ADS-B
also requires GPS, which you may or may not get from a GPS
that you're already using the plane, so it may in some cases
require another separate GPS antenna.

In the case of NavWorx, they have an all-in-one unit that
has it's own GPS and ADS-B antenna, and then they'll also
have a model that you can feed an external GPS signal to,
and install another external ADS-B antenna on your plane.
The all-in-one is a portable, the other is a permanent mount.

Avweb had a podcast on ADS-B this past Monday:

One of the requirements of ADS-B is a TSO'd 146a WAAS GPS for position reporting. They are trying to reduce this requirement to just as S/A off GPS.
I would love to see an install manual for the ADS600 however. The NavWorx devices seems to be a "listen only" device and not a true ADS-B which is supposed to also Broadcast the aircraft current position--but still way cool.

John,

For the GDL-90, you can use the same antenna as your transponder, the GDL-90 has options to deconflict with the transponder signal. However, GDL requires two antenna's, one on the top and bottom for full spherical coverage, so you'll still need to add one more. It also requires a separate gps antenna.
