When I got my licence in 66, and again got coml/multi in 69, They were not in use, at least not that I knew of. I never flew again untill 2003, when of course they were required. Anyone know when they first became availible/ requirement? Charlie Heathco

Canada was requiring around 1972. Congressmen Nick Begich(AK) and Hale
Boggs(LA) disappeared on a flight in Alaska during 1972 campaign, and by
the time I bought my first plane in spring of 1975 they were required in
the US, as had to install one as part of pre-purchase. Don't believe any
of the trainers I flew in 1973-74 getting my license had them.

My '73 Grumman AA-1B had one installed as original equipment.

I got my license in 1973 and bought a T-craft that year that had a EBC-102
ELT (the cheap yellow one with the swinging weight) so it was required by
then.

I'm pretty sure this was one of those regs that was issued with
deadlines extended a couple times. It was rushed through sometime in
early '73, with very little review of the TSO, right after the months
and millions spent searching for the congressmen. Final deadline was
some period longer, as most planes I looked at, shopping in late '74 to
early '75 did not have them. Probably because it was in Alaska, and they
typically got extensions on a lot of regs. They were around $200 back
then, which was a chunk of change, compared to today.
