My kit came with a small heater core with a computer fan attached to it. Is it worth the weight? Does it work okay?  The hookups use brass fittings that weigh a ton. Other safe options?

A few years ago Lowell posted some pictures of the baffles he made on his oil cooler

and IIRC used scat tube to duct heat in. He's got so much skill making stuff, it might

be hard to duplicate what he did but it sure looks nicely done. Those photos might

still be in the archives.

Charles,

  My cabin heater is as you describe. It puts out more heat then my Triumph TR3 (which isn't much). Overall I would say it is worth it. I use it in the winter but then I am in Florida.

My cabin heat comes from the same setup you have but uses two fans.  It puts out some serious heat...enough that I can usually just run the hot coolant through the heater core and don't even need to run the fans (this is down to about 40 degrees F ambient).  When it gets colder, I run the fan for 30 seconds to a minute and that is good for awhile.  I think I will put the switch for the fans on a potentiometer so I can vary the speed, that way I won't have to turn it on and off.  I also but a cable actuated shut-off valve in the supply line so I don't get cooked in the summer months.

Darin C Where did you get the shut-off valve? Does it reroute the fluid flow by blocking one passage C or does it simply open the heater circuit? I need to set one up on my Mod 3.

I think the shut off valve from Napa ($20?) is probably # 6601141 5/8" with the cable in-line to the hose. Kragen Auto # 74627 sells for around $15. You can see pictures on their Web sites.

I couldn't find the Napa part # on their website but the one listed on Partsamerica.com (#74627) is the exact valve I used.  Here is a pic of it from their website and a pic installed in my bird.  The supplied 1/2" coolant hose took a bit of coaxing to get over the 5/8" barbed ends of the valve but with a little lubricant they will go on.

Kitfoxers C Need more coolant plumbing help. Thank you Darin and George. Received my 5/8" Kragen (Parts America) valve yesterday. Now I need 2(at) 1"x1"x5/8" tees to plumb in the heater core and a 1"x1"x1/4" tee to plumb in a "steam vent " line. My coolant tank doesn't have a provision to run the line to it. And C I don't want to spend what CPS wants for a new tank. Evidently the guy I bought the FWF 582 from didn't have a "steam" vent line. Anybody got a source for these tees?
