Hi Gig,
I just did a little specification comparison and decided I will go
with the 496.
First the 696 is too big for my panel the way it is currently laid
out. I can barely fit the 496 in the same stack with my NAV/COMM and
key switch now. Perhaps if I had really wanted a huge GPS display
instead of two large Dynon displays this would be different.
I also was put off by the backup battery choice. The 496 uses a
Lithium ion battery with a 15 hour use specified while the 696 uses
Nickel good for only a couple of hours.
If I live long enough to do all this over again, I think I would opt
for a Blue Mountain combined GPS/EFIS/EMS approach.

I will probably end up with the 496 as well but playing with my panel mock-up I think the way things would have to go is the 696 in the center of the panel where a radio stack would normally be and the Comm and Xponder side by side under the Dynon.
One thing I like about the 696 is that you can have the faux-HSI up at the same time as the map. Since I'm using a single Dynon 180 I'd like to be able to keep the engine instruments all the time and not have to have them only pop-up on alert when I have the Dynon's HSI up.
The Blue Mountain is nice but I really like the idea of the Garmin for a GPS. Does the BM have XM-WX?

Hi Gig,
I'm not sure about the Blue Mountain and XM weather. When I was
looking at their stuff I thought I didn't want the weather
anyway. After discussion at my latest EAA chapter meeting, I am
convinced I really do want the weather. I reviewed a life time of
flying problems and discovered each one was weather related.
My current plan (already partly installed) is to use dual Dynon large
displays with Garmin 496 and SL-30 in the middle. The standard
display configuration might be EFIS plus real HSI on the left Dynon
screen, map and terrain (and weather?) on the GPS, and engine with
optional EFIS on the right side for my wife and copilot.
I forgot to mention, the real show stopper for the Blue Mountain
solution was the large display size. I could fit one of them in my
panel but not two. With a panel the size of a Zodiac, the Blue
Mountain wants to be the only large display.
Best regards,
Paul
