I'm a new list member and just noticed the one-wing landing post. I'm the only western hemisphere owner of a Yak-54. Many people know it under the name "Russian Thunder".
It happens that I had a one wing landing of my own with an R/C model recently. This video was the avweb video of the week, and has been shared on many other sites, including my own: RCGroups.com and FlyingGiants.com.
I find the fake video a bit annoying because so many people have sent it to me and so many have been suckered by it. It seems obvious to me that this is a CGI rendering of an airplane (something I also know something about since I develop the RealFlight flight simulator) and not a model or a real aircraft. I don't mean to insult the people who thought the video was real, but I am simply stunned by how many of my aviation-loving friends bought into it. To me, it seems just as off as the CGI sequences in Pearl Harbor, The Aviator, Flyboys, and other aviation-themed movies. The aircraft in the video simply doesn't behave like a real airplane, whether man-carrying or model.
I can tell you from experience that bringing in an R/C model with one wing is not something most people can hope to do. Since the event happened to me in an R/C model, it's given me an opportunity to consider how hopeless such a situation would be with Russian Thunder. Even with it's performance capabilities, which are still pretty darn impressive even by 2008 standards, it could not possibly be brought in safely without both wings solidly attached.
I'll link everyone to my own One Wing Landing video both on youtube and my blog at RCGroups. I figure this is a good way to introduce myself and maybe you'll find it interesting, even though it is an R/C model of a Yak, and not the real thing:
